Sam Tate, aged 33, and Nick Rutter, aged 30, started their own company after graduating from a design and engineering course at Coventry University.

Their brainchild - Sprue Aegis - is a safety products manufacturer. Nick and Sam decided to start their business after discovering that six million households in the UK own a defective smoke alarm.

They designed the FireAngel Plug-In Smoke Alarm, which is mains-powered and overcomes the need for a replacement battery.

It fits between a light socket and light bulb, and is designed to recharge automatically when the light is switched on. If it goes off accidentally, it can easily be reset with the light switch.

Their FireAngel smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are now available in over 4,000 big-name outlets and Nick and Sam are currently working on launching their company in America.
