This emotional story of human relationships and sacrifice is based on three main characters - mum Saritaji, her step-daughter Shalu and her natural daughter Nimmu.

Bubbly and tomboyish Shalu is extremely spontaneous by nature. What she yearns most in life is a mother's love. Although she showers her affection very openly on step-mum, Saritaji, she is caught up in an emotional turmoil which makes it very difficult for her to reciprocate.
But, strangely enough, Saritaji is prejudiced enough to be able to display her motherly affection to Nimmu. This deeply hurts Shalu who cannot quite hide her emotional pain when witnessing her mother's indifference.

Nimmu might have a shy and subdued nature but she has always supported little step sister in her hour of need. Especially when it concerns her mother.
Into their lives enter Dev (Arjun Rampal) and Samir (Jimmy Shergill). A simple and shy guy, Samir's entire life revolves around his ventriloquism and Shalu. He has always been there since childhood for her whenever she has needed him. But then comes a time in their lives when all he can do is to helplessly suffer Shalu's pain in silence.

Dev, the dynamic and handsome businessman, is the other world whom Shalu is willing to explore. He comes with the basic purpose of closing down the life line of the local people but eventually succeeds in becoming their saviour.
Soon enough, Shilu falls for both men, although deep in her heart she knows who will eventually sweep her off her feet.
In no time she has both men longing for her but what she craves most is a mother's love from Saritaji ...
This family entertainer, which is characterised by superlative performances of Rekha, Priety Zinta and Mahima Choudary, will be releasing in the UK cinemas on 6 September 2002.
