Have any of the Ambridge farmers applied for the Entry Level Scheme (ELS) or Higher Level Scheme (HLS)*?

If so, has anyone actually received their ELS payment, or accumulated enough points to be accepted into HLS?

Thanks in advance for reply. (Just want to know if it's as impossible to tackle in fiction as it is in RL, I s'pose. Back to adding up trees...)

*New Government schemes which reward(sic) for looking after the environment, over and above compliance with all that is legally required under the newest set of gold-plated directives on the environment, and (in the case of HLS, right now) likely to run out of funds before getting properly under way.

Sadly I don't think we know, Primrose - the farming community seem strangely silent on the matter of DEFRA initiatives. Unlike my OH, a RL working farmer who finds new and imaginative ways to extend the English language every time he receives a communication from the dreaded Dept. (He surpassed all previous efforts last week when we heard thet Defra officials are sharing a 4 million pound bonus).

Could the SWs rise to the challenge of giving Brian, David, Pat&Tony some lines that that realistically represent the views of today's farmers when confronted with officialdom.

We have had some mentions in passing about the ELS - even the Grundys qualify - and we were disussing one of our farms going in for the HLS at the scriptmeeting earlier this week. It won't be on air until next Feb/March, though and we will be monitoring the funding to make sure it is still likely to happen.

Good luck, Mr K, but that far in advance it's impossible to know whether the dreaded Rural Payments Agency will, by then, be a thing of the past - I suspect a lot of farmers hope so, so long as it is replaced with something workable and sensible.
