Nice to hear Neil mention Rose Cottage. It was going to be Sid and polly's retirement home. They chose the name, as they had converted it from non-residential use.
Hence the question. What was Rose Cottage before Sid and Polly converted it? A chapel is my guess...

From my listening to Vintage Archers tapes I thought Rose Cottage was a ramshackle cottage, not a conversion from another use, but I could be wrong
Hi Mabel
This wonderful site:
says that Rose Cottage in Penny Hassett was purchased in 1975 by Sid and Polly for gbp 4,500.
What is gbp - is it the same as pounds? If so I think it supports my theory of a conversion, as it seems quite cheap, even for 1975....?!
Assuming GBP = £ sterling, then £4500 in 1975 for a run down cottage in a rural part of UK sounds about right. Where I live in SE, about 25 miles from London, at that time 3 bed semi-det houses within walking distance of a rail station were going for £6000-£7000. My salary was £5000 p.a. then. Lots of hindsight wisdom and kicking of ex who considered property ownership theft, per Marx. I wanted to buy.
Duh, my salary was £5k in 1977, during a Pay Freeze, my pay doubled, new job titles/promotions helped get around regs. In 1975 I was a student until June. Flats near the station, overlooking a park, built in 1975 cost £7000, for a 2 bed, I watched them being built, longed for one, but b/f, eventual ex, did not approve. They are now prime properties.
According to TBOTA, Rose Cottage is 'An enchanting seventeenth-century cottage of Cotswold stone several miles out of Ambridge'
Thanks for the advice on house prices. I remember house prices rising considerably between 1971 and 1975; by 1974 an ordinary three bedroom house on the Isle of Wight had risen to the £10,000 - £13,000 mark; so my guess had been that a historic cottage in prime mainland commuter territory would be at least that, even if run down.
But I'm sure some sort of conversion took place rather than rennovation, and the choice of a name because of that. I suppose a chapel could have been built in the 1600's - sometimes they were themselves converted from other uses e.g. barns I believe. However, there would be more problems, planning-wise for converting such an unusual building I think. Maybe it had been a pub prior to being bought - but the pub would have had a name which could have given some inspiration for a name. My memory is that they couldn't think of one, until they planted roses to go round the door (in time-honoured fashion) to enjoy whent hey reached maturity in their retirement...
I think that was another property they looked at - the one "handy for getting to" that was next to the bypasss (ideal for a deaf couple). Rose Cottage (Peggy acted as guarrentor for £4000 at the bank, when Mrs. Meade wouldn't) was where Sid pt a nail through the water pipe, wasn't it?
Thanks Rosie - don't rec all the nail incident, or the more than one property, so I expect you're correct...
Who was Polly?
Ah, the first Mrs Perks. Affectionately knwon to Sid as "Poll Doll". Would that be allowed these days...?

or Moy Polloi
No worse than "Lyndie-bottoms," "Pipsqueak" or "Feebs."
yo rosie. wh lives in rose cottage now then? oh lord, i never get my cottages right via inhabitants. another one to add to the list i suppose!
It was sold to buy the Bull (with Guy Pemberton's share) from Peggy Woolley, I think, irene. It is in Penny Hasset, so you don't need to wory about Ambridge Geography!
thank you rosie dearest. how are you btw. i know you dont post elsewhere these days. i see west ham are playing so i am guessing where your beloved is!
Kathy, when she was Kathy Holland and Lucy's teacher, rented Rose Cottage from Sid.
