I don't know if it's etiquette to make an appeal like this on this message board, but I'm getting desperate.

I teach English Language A-level, which involves the students in undertaking a language investigation of their own choice. This year, one of my students wanted to investigate the various accents in The Archers, with particular reference to the local 'Borsetshire' accent. She's been recording recent episodes - no problem there - but so far, Joe Grundy hasn't been around, and he's one of the best examples. So I said I'd lend Debbie the Archers audio tapes I bought some years ago...but of course, they've disappeared.

So, the request: does anyone have any Archers tapes they'd be prepared to lend (they would come back by the end of term), or know where I could obtain them? (There's one going on eBay, which I'm bidding for, but have no certainty of getting at a reasonable price.) I'd pay postage both ways, of course.

    Thank you in advance.

Sue Sims (Bournemouth School for Girls)

    Hello Sue!
I don't know if they are what you want but the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú-Online shop has Archers cassettes for sale.

My husband bought some vintage tapes from an Archers Fan Club shop in Southend last year.

Amazon may also have some links to second hand sellers. I hope your student gets something in time, although I'm not sure all the accents are that authentic.
True regional accents can be heard on TV in the little fill in "shorts" called Creature Comforts.... as they are animated recordings of ordinary evey day conversations.
    Good luck anyway!

Thank you very much indeed - I'll try these options. As for the authenticity, you are, of course, quite right: that's roughly what my student is hoping to confirm. We've got some recordings of the authentic accent of the area where The Archers is meant to be set, and she's going to be doing some phonological and grammatical comparisons.

    Sue

Sue, 4 or 5 years ago there was a discussion on these boards on this very point. I remember that the discussion seemed to be very well informed (academically) and it reached the conclusion that none of the country accents on TA represented in a consistent fashion any genuine local accent. There is a generic term "Mummerset" (probably coined in connection with TA) to describe the bogus country accents produced by actors.

Unfortunately this discussion was held at a time when no (public) archive of posts was maintained and so we can't look it up.

There are some links to "old" accents on this page:

Adam with a girlfriend - I'd forgotten all about that. I don't remember him as anything but a silent until he came back from Africa.

    Sue

I have the Vintage Archers double cassette set - published around 1988 - which covers lots of "classic" scenes. I haven't listened to it lately, so I can't remember if Joe's on it. But I'd be happy to lend it to you.
