I seem to recall that in a Radio 4 re-scheduling the episodes of The Archers were shortened, for the news, but, as an appeasement, the Sunday episode was added. My addictwife disagrees. Did it happen, and if so, when?

Hello addicthusband, I'm new to the mb or do you call it Mustard Land but have been listening on and off for years. The Sunday episode was certainly around in the late 80's. I remember the re-schedulling though, cos I used to listen to the lunchtime repeat at 1.40 but moving it to after 2 was too late as I was back at work, come to think of it that's when I stopped listening regularly, I've only recently come back through the convenience of the internet.

When the Sunday episode was added, a minute or so was trimmed from the other 5.

It's probably called value for money or somthing, rather than 'swizz' which I think is the technical term for it. Dx

These were the infamous Boyle changes to the R4 schedule of 1998 since when we have received 6*12.5 minute episodes rather than 5*15 ones (note that the time per week (=75 mins) has not changed).

Why does it take 11 hrs for moderation consideration are we waiting for the committee to convene!

Were the episodes fifteen minutes long or was the running time of the omnibus only one hour? I'm sure I recall that the episodes were edited to fit the time available for the omnibus and so I used to try to spot the dialogue during the week that would get the chop. Time also had to be found to fit in the Uncle Tom preamble.

While we're on about it didn't someone else do the preamble after Tom? Jack Wooley springs to mind, but I could be wrong (and often am).

We currently have a lot of (very welcome) new people using the message board, so we have a lot of messages in moderation. Sorry it's taking so long.

Both. One scene per episode was the "omnicut", designed to be chopped for the omnibus. Much hated by the writers, as you can imagine.

And guessing which scene would be cut, was a mildly diverting past time for the more dedicated listener.

Now did I imagine it, or was it sometimes the case during the nineties that parts of scenes would get cut as well as / instead of losing a whole scene? I'm sure I remember the occasional scene seeming to end earlier than it had done during the week.

And did an extra scene used to have to be sacfrificed for Uncle Tom's bit at the start?

I'm sure the omnibus was lenthened to 75 mins a little before the 6 episode pattern kicked in. I remember thinking they would have to go back to cutting. Then it became clear each weekday episode would be shorter!

The same thing still happens with things like "In our Time" - Yesterday's evening programme on Pope for instance left out references to modern Shakespeare editing and to urinating contests...

I'm sure you're right, Mekkinz. I often heard both the evening transmission and the omnibus and the odd phrase or two would have disappeared from many scenes - in fact, I thought that was the preferred method rather than having whole disposable scenes.

Very occasionally a long scene would be written in two parts, and half of that would be the omnicut and sometimes the sums didn't quite work out which would mean that a little bit extra had to be cut somewhere.
