There was a discussion recently about Pat losing her Welsh accent. If only Tom could lose his Nottingham accent. I find it an anomaly that he has this accent when he was born and lived all his life on the opposite side of the Midlands. I thought that actors could adopt an accent if called upon to do so. What happened at the audition? I can only assume that it was not thought necessary for the actor to speak in character or he was unable to have at least a stab at a more suitable accent.
Interstingly if you listen to "early" Tom he's quite RP. What appears to have happened is that his natural accent came through gradually.
A bit like Emma, then, who is becoming more Birmingham as time wears on. Do the actors have some kind of appraisal process to make sure they are still fulfilling the requirements of the job...?

Oh, yes indeed, there's a Board than scruitinises their performances in infinite detail. I think it's called the "message" Board.
