Do you have to pass a test to be let in on the ** mystery? Why some messages have them, others don't?
Is it perhaps a secret code, divulged only to those out of pre-mod???
... which i'm not ... yet ... but i live in hope ...

Unless I've missed a reply, ** shows other posters that you are still online...... and not closed down and gone shopping in Felpersham or somewhere!

It's slightly less useful than that, Frances. What they show is that you requested a page sometime during the five minute period that ended up to five minutes ago. They're updated every five minutes, so if you just load the site then switch off and go out it may not show you as being online until three minutes after you've left the house, and then show you as being online for five minutes. However, if you're a slow reader working your way down a long page your stars may vanish before you've reached the bottom, despite the fact you're still here.

Aha! Thanks for that Peet. I'm afraid I just try to work out techy stuff as I go or what I can crib from others......
Thanks to Maggie the Iron Lady, (and I NEVER thought I'd ever say that!) at the end of the 80s I did a Computer course from home, which involved having a free lend of a machine, floppy discs, MS Dos and all, plus a big fat manual on what to do.
If you could produce a document inside 3 months you were given a Diploma. Naturally I'm still running behind trying to catch up!

Frances, I pick up that sort of stuff by hanging around where the managers and coders of the system hang out. Pay particular attention to anything Jim Lynn says, for he wrote the system and knows of what he is speaking. He's also an all-round good egg and not as tied down by Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú internal politics as most.
