I seem to remember back when Alice was born, that she had Downs, and Brian was not sure if he could cope. Was this true? Was I dreaming? or was it something that turned out to be misdiagnosis and everything was really all OK?
I am very new to the website although not to the Archers. HAPPY NEW YEAR ONE AND ALL

My book of the Archers ( somewhat old now) does not mention Downs. It mentions her strong will etc....

No Alice didn't have Downs. Jenny was on a pilot amniocentesis scheme with dangers spelt out (miscarriage etc). I think Kathy's tests came back with a raised risk that Jamie had Downs but after discussion she decided to keep this surprise baby

That's right. Because JD was an older mother, she was told of her heightened risk of a Downs baby, so she decided to have the test. All was clear, and Alice has always been healthy.

Brian lost interest in her when she wasn't a boy though.

Wasn't that an initial test to see if an amnoscentesis was advised? iirc she then had the second test, which revealed the unborn child did not have Down's Syndrome.

Shula otoh chose not to have any tests, as she had decided not to have an abortion regardless of any condition that would have been revealed by screening...

I remember Jennifer having the tests done. I was pregnant at the time and I recall thinking that Brian would probably not be very supportive if the baby had Downs syndrome. I remember Shula deciding not to have any tests, and I have a distant recollection of someone tryint to talk her into having them on the grounds that as a single parent she ought not to take nay chances, can't remember who that was though.
