I know that it's common practice for the actors to "double up" when there are parts such as "receptionist in a hotel" to be covered. I believe that this happened to a much greater extent in the early days of the programme (I think that Ysanne Churchman who played Grace Archer also stepped in for a number of monor parts). Some actors have also played a character who left the programme and then returned as another character several years later, Hedli Niklaus as Eva Lenz and Kathy Perkins for example, and Moir Lesley as Sophie and Janet Fisher.
Does anyone have any idea which actor has played the most roles?
I think the answer could well be Ysanne Churchman.
According to my records she played six characters:
Jennifer Aldridge (nee Archer) - the first of five actors to play the part;
Grace Archer - the second of two actors to play the part;
Barbara Drury;
Joan Ilverton;
Jocelyn Page;
Mary Pound.
Geoffrey Lewis (who was married to Lesley Saweard (who plays Christine Barford) played five parts:
Charles Brown;
PC Geoff Bryden (the second of two actors to play the part);
Dr David Cavendish;
Stan Cooper;
Dick Corbey.
Leslie Bowma played four parts:
Joe Blower;
George Fairbrother;
Jim Price (the first of two actors to play the part);
Sam Saunders.
How's that to be going on with?
With best Wishes,
Keith
Further to my earlier message, I now believe June Spencer could equal Ysanne. She, too, has played six parts:
Tony (yes Tony) Archer - the second of three actors to do so;
Mary Benson;
Rita Flynn - the second of two actors to play the part;
Nancy Smith;
Emily Spenlowe;
Peggy Wooley.
Arnold Peters has played five parts:
Major Austen Bigsby;
Harold Gadsby;
Rev David Latimer;
Len Thomas;
Jack Wooley - the second of two actors to play the part.

hi, Keith,have you seen
the site listing actors in The Srchers Encyclopaedia?
Happy New Year!
Hi Rosie,
appy New Year to you, too.
In a word - "no" - but I'm about to take a look.
Thanks.
With best wishes,
Keith

Isn't it a bit of an in-joke about how many parts Tim Bentink ("David") has played? Or are you just talking about named characters? There must be at least six or seven "French waiters", for example, and that's just the start...
"Shula" has played a lot of the children over the years, IIRC.
As far as I know Judy has played only four (named) characters:
Kenton, - the first of four;
Darren;
Shula;
Adam - the first of three.
In reply to Peet, as far as I know, Tim has only played one (named) French waiter, the one when Ian proposed to Adam.
If anyone can tell me the names of characters, together with the names of the uncredited actors who played them, I'd love to know them.
Who, for instance, played the thugs when Helen recently got drunk? It was obviously a member of the cast, but I didn't recognise the voices, and the actors weren't included in the cast.
No, in my earlier examples, I was only quoting named actors.

Keith, there was a thread about this in "Discuss the Archers"

RT cast list suggests this -
drunken man: Joseph Kloska
Rosie,
Again, I have to thank you. I might have known you'd come up with the goods!
Best wishes,
Keith

AddictKeith, Tim is known for "standing in" for bit parts. About twice a year we have a "was it him?" moment when a really minor (one-word) part goes uncredited; even if only half of those really were him that's one extra role for every year he's been on the show. ;-D

Tim is quite often "man on tannoy" (eg during election campaign, at shows) - possible a homage to his Piccadilly Line role in real life??
I'm quite sure this is so.
The examples I gave, however, in answer to the first message in this thread, were for substantial parts, not for an actor saying just a couple of words here or there, where the actor - generally - remains uncredited.

... and, it seems, frequently without ayditiion!

Indeed, but my answer is also a serious response to the first message, which made no such stipulation.
Fair enough, Pete. I'll give in, and agree with you that it's Tim who's played the most parts.

Just seen in N&Qs that the vicar at Sir Sid's funeral was.......Bert!!
Well I was amazed but having seen how many actors play such a variety of roles I guess it's not that surprising.
Wow, I like to flatter myself that I'm pretty good at picking up when cast members are playing other roles, but I didn't spot that one.
Keith, is this a good time to ask Keri if he could use his influence to get ALL the actors and actresses (PLEASE, if they are female) listed in the Radio Times, however ephemeral the part?
I'd have thought it was an excellent time to remind him that we'd please like a COMPLETE list of actors in either RT or in the cast list on the net.
Please, Mr K?
Keith
