OH has been reading the Jo Toye Ambridge novels.
He wants to know if Phil inherited loads of dosh after Grace died, as the novel indicates she was a wealthy woman "in her own right".
This was before even I started listening to TA, so I cannot answer his question.
Grace was certainly wealthy, being the daughter of George Fairbrother the local squire.
I don't think vulgar things like money were discussed in TA back in the 50s.
Indeed that is still the case today!
(Don't mention the massive insurance policy that Phil had taken out on Grace)
bob
Jill and Phil's major falling out was when he wanted to use the money Grace left him to fund the twins at private school.
Thank you, Rosie. What a mine of info you are.
How much did Grace leave Phil?
I shouldn't think Grace would have left much. She'd married, and in those days that would mean she had 'left' her family and wouldn't be entitled to any of the estate - and she predeceased her parents anyway.
So barring a legacy from a more distant relative, and anything from a life assurance policy, I don't suppose it would have been a fortune.
It certainly wasn't mentioned when the Archer clan were trying to find the money to buy Brookfield a few years later.......

her father, yes, but surely not her mother? Her father re-married shortly before her death (begetting the ill-fated Robin) - and surely nothing as unsavoury as a divorce would have tainted the 1950's Fairbrothers....?!
Even if her mother had died, the estate would be in the gift of her father, who in 1950's Britain would be unlikely to leave much to a married daughter - presumably there would be a son / grandson / nephew who would inherit the estate.
"Grace was a wealthy woman in her own right" - she'd inherited from her mother. When Phil found this, he decided he had to make a few thousand before marrying her.

Brookfield has been expanded in terms of acreage several times since Grace died quite probably the money was used for this. Or perhaps when he finally decided to throw in his lot with dan at Brookfield he had to buy himself a partnership (maybe that's what ultimately funded Dan and Doris's pensions, of which I remember no other mention).
I'm sure that any money he did receive was ploughed) into the farm over the years.

Three thoughts occur to me from reading this thread.
a. Tee, hee Keri. I like that, 'ploughed into the farm'.
b. I always had respect for Jill, because she, almost alone among the Archer clan, has a mind of her own. Her views on hunting and private education are different to the rest of the Archer lemmings. And perhaps more to the point, she has the courage of her convictions and will stand up for what she believes in.
c. The Grundys and their ilk lose their farms becuse they do not have money to plough into their business. Okay, the fact that Eddie was useless did not help. But I am sure even Eddie could have made a go of it if he had money to help during the hard times.
