"When Tony Archer's father died and left him a considerable shareholding in Ambridge Farmers Ltd, he could have joined his grandfather and uncle in the highly successful company...
... he declined offers to work at Brookfield Farm and took a job on the Bellamy Estate ... he was fired ... went to France for a long holiday ... swallowed his pride sufficiently to go to work for the family company ... became player-manager of the village football team ... In the end he left Brookfield, retaining his shares, and went into partnership with Haydn Evans ..."
from "Twenty-five years of the Archers : Who's Who in Ambridge" Jock Gallagher 1976 reprint.
But, what happened to those shares?

Rosie, if you don't know I suspect the SWs just forgot and so they've vanished.

I think Ambridge Farmers Ltd has been dissolved - possibly when Dan retired?
Yes, but what happened to Tony's ineritance? Was he bought out? By whom? And if so, what happened to Tony's share of the money?

What happened when Haydn left, did Tony have to buy him out? What about when they went organic, that would have needed some investment? The shares could have been sold back to Phil on either of those occasions. Bet it was something like that.
There was certainly no mention of them (iirc) when Tony wanted to buy Bridge Farm.
I do hope that the SWs have not left another unresolved issue hanging.
That really would be too bad.

The Tuckers were at Willow Farm by then - Bill Insley bought the farm, and Dan used his influence with Lilian to get the Tuckers the tenancy of Ambridge Farm.
Tony has remained a tenant farmer all through - Lilian offered them Bridge Farm in the late 70's.
Ironic, as in was Dan's dream that Tomy should take over Brookfield. Not his fault that his father wasn't worthy to inherit....!

That was my point. If he had still had shares in Brookfield he could at least have used them as collateral to raise a mortgage on Bridge Farm. and Maybe Peggy would have been more willing to give him some of the proceeds from the sale of The Bull.
I remember this being discussed before. Christine was also a shareholder but she got The Stables in exchange and (I think) there was some equivalent deal for Tony but I can't remember what.
Well, yes, that's it, there have been speculations about Tony and Brookfield - but this is the first time I recall seeing in print that he retained the shares.
Does anybody remember what happened to the "considerable shareholding" Jack left Tony?

It's worth saying that not everything in Jock's books equates exactly to what went out on air.
Gasp!
You mean - he sometimes *made* *things* *up* ?
I'm shocked!
I do hope the present writer of "Who's Who" doesn't take this attitude?
*~:+)}}}
Was Bill Insley the character played by Ted Moult?
Yes
So, what is the present state of Tony's inheritance of Brookfield shares? We had a conversation about how Chris got the Stables bought by Dan/Doris/Brookfield, Phil got the farm - did Jack get nothing after all? I remember him doing a Lizzie on air!
Logically, if Phil got Brookfield, Christine got the Stables then Jack would have got money to buy the Bull (was he a tenant, initially?). But then Tony wouldn't have got any shares, would he?

Jack Archer bought the Bull with money from a distant relative (Aunt Laura) and afasik Dan left the farm intact to Phil. No sense that it should be shared out between his three children. If it had been, and that principal was applied in successive generations, it would now be divided between his 9(?) grandchildren, which puts Elizabeth's claim to a quartor share into perspective.
