Mr Keri, please can you tell me how many dairy cows , beef suckler cows ,dairy youngstock, breeding ewes and beef cross cattle are at Brookfield ?
I haven't got quite that level of detail but the farm is listed in our Who's Who section as having:
200 milkers (Friesians)
80 followers (heifers/calves)
90 beef cattle (Herefords)
300 ewes
Hens (small scale)
Thanks Keri
I should have found that myself.
Hmm, not sure about some of these facts and figures.
1.Stocking rates ,rather tight i feel-not altered when the cows were increased? A cow(adult) to the acre for grazing and conservation is usually trotted out,but that is by "on paper farmers" and its never that easy. Plus you have the followers 300 ewes and the Herefords-90 ,is that 30 cows with calves plus their 30 yearlings from last year and 30 more 2 year olds?
2.Dairy followers -doesnt seem many for 200 cows
even 25% replacement(a bit low) would give you 50 calves,50 yearlings and 50 2 year olds.
3. fodder beet. never mentioned
4. Forage maize 17 acres for 200 cows ???? That must be a slight sniff each cow per day. I grow 30 acres for 50 cows.A neighbour grows 40 acres for 100. Most use it to buffer feed at grass-so even more needed then.
"Who's Who" by Keri also gives:
CROPS:
278 acres grassland
100 acres cereals
29acres oil seed rape
15 acres potatoes
12 acres beans
10 acres fodder beet
17 acres forage maize
8 acres set-aside
"Brookfield is a 469-acre mixed farm incorporating the old holdings of Marney's and Hollowtree."
