Crushed by a vintage tractor that Tony was doing up with the help of a rather weird girl.

...which we rather hope was the inspiration for the new "David doing up a tractor" storyline...
Go on, Ruth, take 'er for a test drive... ;-D

Verity you really missed something there.
John died in Tony's arms following an argument with the tractor which he lost. It was very moving and I cried. I then cried again during the Sunday omnibus and it was replayed in POTW and guess what - triple whammy. It was very touchingly done and if I remember rightly the closing music was omitted. (Or am I having an Eastenders moment?) Pat and Tony went through a bit of a bad patch afterwards.

I agree TriviaS, just remembering Tony sending Tom away before he saw John and sitting down and putting his jacket over John and saying "that'll keep you warm"... it was very moving and very well done indeed.

TriviaS, you're right about the theme tune being dropped at the end of that episode.
The accident happened on Tom's 17th birthday (Feb 25th 1998). John was away ploughing by himself while everyone else got the party ready IIRC, so when the tractor rolled over there was no-one near to help.
The link with the current Bridge Farm SL is that Helen knocked Mike over on what would have been John's birthday - not a nice memory for Pat and Tony.

"I then cried again during the Sunday omnibus"
I heard it first on the Omnibus edition.
Sitting in my car.
On a hill in the Lakes with beautiful views.
On my birthday.
Where were you when you heard it?

This is awful. My uncle died the same way in 1964.

Ouch Verity, you must have been gutted when you found John's story. Sorry

And Hayley had recently dumped John because he had been playing away, so she felt upset and guilty too....
She deserves a baby with Roy now poor lass.

RB, my uncle died the year I was born, so I have no memory of it. But my mother, she still cries about it... He died a horrible death, throwing mud over himself in a futile attempt to protect himself from the flames

Hadn't John and Tony had a row just before the accident?

And wasn't John about to propose to Hayley? Had the ring and everything.

He took her out and proposed the night before, and she rejected him.
