Did I imagine it or did Phil and Jill once separate for a short while? What was the cause of their disagreement and how was it resolved?

I don't recall them ever having a split in the sense I think you mean. Jill had what was called a nervous breakdown in those days and may have had to go off some where to recuperate.
There was also the occassion when Phil was getting no sleep, because of the crying baby of one of the Farmhouse B&B guests, and he moved in with david and Ruth for a while, but Dr, Lakey Hill sorted that out.
They also fell out about Lisa and Craig, the squatters at Rickyard Cottage, with their BabyScott, but Phil stayed at home and glowered.

More recently didn't they have a chilly period (late 1980s?) when one of Phil's old girlfriends turned up and he spent some time showing her round?
(I did wonder, when the D&R storyline came up, that P&/ or J might recall this and have some inkling about what had been the matter...)

Phil and ironically Heather, Ruth's mum, in the days when she used to visit, got on well enough to make Jill jealous

< Jill had what was called a nervous breakdown in those days>
Wasn't there a query over thyroid trouble - also experienced by Kenton?
Not mentioned in relation tgo either these days (but that's not unusual...!)
