... that people quote other peoples' messages in. Once when I was lurking I saw an explanation of how to do that but didn't need to know as I hadn't joined ML then. I've hunted through the FAQ but can't find how to do it. Please would some kind soul enlighten me?
Many thanks

<QUOTE>Like this?</QUOTE><BR /><BR /><BR />type - <QUOTE>then type or paste what you want in the box</Quote><BR /><BR />But use lower case qs and preview so you get it right.
then type or paste what you want in the boxÂ
Wow, thanks for the pronto reply, Reggie. I didn't expect to be out of pre-mod for another 20 mins or more, let alone have an answer.
Cheers

Be good if it was in the FAQ - save newbies having to ask.

hello
Ooh it works!
Now how do clever people get the name of the person in the 'quoted from' bit. ie. who it is quoted by?

Why can't they do it automatically like they did when this new format started?

Why can't they do it automatically like they did when this new format started?Â
The feature was withdrawn because the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú didn't provide any easy way to prune a quote. People would quote the entirity of a long post then add "I agree" or similar. This was evidently felt to be a Bad Thing as threads were full of very long quotes.
So they removed the quote boxes and added the "This is a reply to" links, so you could refer back to the quoted post if you wished.
Of course, the links only work if people reply to the post that they are actually addressing, which unfortunately they don't always do.
Best wishes
Achilles

There are two problems:
It is unobvious sufficiently often to make catching-up quite difficult, if you haven't read the previous posts in the recent past. Especially if there is a page-break intervening.
The thread-view features depend on the reply-to links being correct; if they are not, you get a threading view that misattributes posts. This can be quite painful; I've just been reading a thread with > 100 messages on it and a couple of mis-applied links led me to believe that some sub-conversations were finished when they weren't; this made it difficult to read.

Sorry Reg, this is a genuine question, but how do I type and paste?

Rosie,
Norty corner for me.Â
not at all! The thread view features are part of our scripts; you can find details at . They are documented on the PopupPost pop-up help window. You probably need to install our scripts to understand fully as it's a bit hard to describe the features, but they are jolly useful.
Best wishes
Achilles
Oh, thank you, Achilles, I never thought of that!
I thought it was the usual view thingie.
Sorry - I see the word 'script'and think of drama.

I should add that Jont has done a brilliant job on the documentation .. but that this stuff is really hard to get to grips with if it's not in front of you.
cheers

But use lower case qs and preview so you get it right.Â
Like that? Wow I've done it!
Thanks RT. I wandered onto this message board accidentally but it's great to see that I've learnt something by doing so. Always wondered how people managed to do that!
