Can anyone remember which female character once attended marriage guidance - possibly in the 80s or early 90s?

I thought I recalled Pat doing this when she was seduced away from Tony by Roger, but elsewhere I have been told she never actually had an affair.

What struck me particularly at the time was the one-sided nature of the conselling sessions, as the TA budget didn't seem to stretch to an additional actor, so the counsellor never spoke. Really didn't work for me - I have been a MG counsellor in the distant past.

Am I just imagining this? Could it have been Kathy?

Kathy went for counselling of some point - after her affair with Dave Barry but before Sid found out

Kathy did go for counselling - on Pat's recommendation - but not sure whether she saw a marriage guidance counsellor. She went to try to come to terms with her feelings of guilt, following her affair.

I think that Pat did have an affair with Roger, as I recall her conversation with Tony about working together to get through the crisis. It was the start of their Organic enterprise, and seemed wacky at the time. However, I don't think Pat ever admitted to an affair, a bit like Elizabeth's association with Hugh, about the time that Lilly'n'Freddy were conceived. By way of contrast, Roof has admitted everthing to Deevid, although no actual rumpy-pumpy ever occurred.

And yes, silences were the order of the day - to the extent that eventually Kathy said that the counsellor didn't say very much, but was a very good listener!

The sessions also allowed Kathy to think about her work situation - after leaving Borchester Grammar for a head of dept job at the local comp, the two Borchester comprehensives merged, causing her problems.

I'm glad to know my memory is not imaginary- does anyone know when this would have been?

IRL even counsellors that expect the client to do all the work are not completely silent - they atill make the little mmhmm and listening noises.

Well that's what I thought I remembered - but maybe it was an inappropriate friendship that was never actually consummated?

    Not always, actually...!!

I think in late 1990 - as it would have been between the involvement with Dave Barry (early 1990) and Sid finding out about it (early 1991)...

As I remember we got the impression that Pat was very close to Roger and coming home late, but we never heard from him so we never knew either way for sure

Really? You sound as if you are talking from experience - I'd be interested to know what kind of counsellors work this way?

As I say, I was a MG counsellor myself during the 80s and we were encouraged to 'feed back' to clients what they were saying to us, so quite a bit of interaction.

When it was Kathy on the radio, the total silence of the counsellor made it impossible for me to imagine that he/she was actually sitting there - and presumably there was no actor: so it felt very unreal.

To settle this speculation, I've cheated and looked in "The Book of the Archers" (I usually rely upon my memory), and it states that Pat "fell in love with her lecturer: dark. hamdsome and soon-to-be-divorced Roger Coombes"....."but Tony didn't notice. He never knew how close his marriage came to collapse."
Under Roger Coombes' listing it states that "Richard Adamson had a quiet word with Pat, who eventually broke off the affair."
So, there it is, it WAS an affair, and the vicar sorted it!

One in particular, whom I later discovered had written a book. The extracts from Kathy's sessions rang very true - but would I think have featured significant looks of one kind and another from the counsellor...
