I've asked this elsewhere, but the thread was too heavy with other issues....

Am I right in thinking that the conception of Ruairi was unintended, ie some sort of contraceptive failure? I seem to remember Brian saying something to Siobhan along the lines of "I thought we were being careful"!

Also, was the reason she decided to keep the baby that there was a previous history of infertility with her husband - so this was her big chance of having a child?

Just wanted to check if my vague memories have any substance...

    Thank you
    SK

This was a big question at the time, as we know Brian didn't intend (consciously, anyway), but he kind-of assumed Siobhán would feel the same and take care of this.

However, she was keen to have a child, and certainly would not countenance "getting rid" of the young child once concieved. Hence the question of whether she would equally not have willingly blocked any process which might have led to a pregnancy...

This was a big question at the time

I'm guessing from this reply that we were never actually given the precise details...?

What about the infertility thing with Tim, am I making that up?

Siobhan had fairly recently had a miscarriage [she was pregnant at the same time as Lizzie, hence their friendship.] There were other clues that the Hathaway marriage had been a bit bumpy before the move to Ambridge and that the baby was an important marker for their new life.

Generally held, I think, that Siobhan had every intention of getting pregnant as soon as possible but she and Tim were already drifting and Tim was buying scarves for Janet. She did proposition Greg at one point but he was already ensnared by Helen. Brian was only too happy to be charmed by linguistic variations.

When she and Tim were separated and she was pregnant with Ruairi, she had some bleeding and panicked, thinking she might lose this baby too. She called Tim and he came and helped her. Can't remember whether he took her to hospital or not, but she was very grateful for his help.

Yes - this was how she let slip to Elizabeth who the baby's father was - by saying how much more helpful Tim was than Brian would have been...

I thought I remembered Tim having bought the scarf for Siobhan and when she said it wasn't her colour he gave it to Janet. Anyone else remember?

Other way round jenpet: he was already an 'admiring friend' of Janet when he bought her the scarf sometime before Christmas [they used to have offices/consulting rooms in the old vicarage so often shared a cuppa and a chat.]

Janet was already smitten, though not declared [except possibly to Shula] and her CofE vicaring conscience wouldn't allow her to accept the scarf [or the admiring sentiments.] Tim later gave it to Siobhan who remarked, possibly pointedly, that it was a shade of green she never wore. We were never quite sure how quickly she picked up on Janet's devotion [or potential jealousy.]

    Jenpet's right

From the Lowfield summaries site, 22nd Feb 2001

Tim gets home and Siobhán, presenting the evidence, asks him if he has been sleeping with Janet Fisher. Tim says nothing happened, the scarf was an impulse thing. That it had originally been a present for Siobhán makes it worse.

    And December 28th 2000 (Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú)

Siobhan and Tim have had a busy Christmas, he at the surgery and she with The Mikado and preparing a paper for a meeting in Amsterdam. They’re both tired and a bit fractious. Tim is also peeved when he finds that Siobhan has casually left out a scarf he had bought her for Christmas on the bread bin. Doesn’t she like it? Siobhan admits that green isn’t really her colour. Tim says he’ll take it back then.

Later Tim is discussing his Christmas with Janet and he gives her the scarf as a thank you for her work on the calendar. They find themselves under the mistletoe. Tim gently kisses Janet. Janet thanks Tim for the scarf, quickly makes her excuses and leaves

Didn't Susan Carter become involved in this somehow? I seem to remember her telling Clarrie that she had read the contents of a card or letter which Tim had sent to Janet. Clarrie naturally was shocked that Susan should have done such a thing.

Mabel I stand corrected. Obviously I 'remembered' that Siobhan's comment about the green scarf indicated that he was thinking a lot about Janet at the time and not much about what what else was in his wife's wardrobe.

This is completely unrelated, but I'm rather surprised that green isn't Siobhan's colour. I suppose I thought of her as a Scarlett type who often wore green to accentuate the colour of her eyes. smiley - winkeye

LizaN my image is of classic irish bright auburn wavy hair with clear aqua blue eyes - hence the right shades of blues and nary a green to detract from their brilliance. Green would be fine from a distance though.

"Tim was buying scarves for Janet"

I think you may have hit upon a wonderful euphimism (?SP - it's been a long day) that I must immediately adopt. Unfortunately I don't think know eough tragic TA fans who'll get it.

It conjures up rather lovely images...
