Helen, Tom, Brenda, Roy, Fallon, Ed, Emma...
and probably some other characters I have left out. These are all grown-ups who live with their parents.

Do they pay rent? Contribute to household expenses? (Bills, shopping, repairs, etc.?) Or are they complete parasites?

Helen and Tom yes - Pat wouldn't let them get away with not making a contribution to the household expenses.

Roy and Haley yes - Mike couldn't keep that house going on his income and he probably still has a mortgage. They have a much bigger income than him anyway. Brenda possibly makes a nominal contribution.

Ed - no Clarrie's too soft on him and she controls the purse strings.

Em - probably not, doesn't earn enough money. Chris - yes regards it as a duty and a right.

Fallon - not sure of her economic circs but possibly not.

I think I rememnber Roy going on about what a pittance the rent would be, when they moved out of Nightingale Farm, and Hayley was aghast at Betty ironing his shirts ("He's perfectly capable of ironing his own shirts!" she hissed furiously. "Ah, but I like to do it for him!" Betty replied, bovinely).

And I think Susan told someone how Chris enjoyed giving her "a contribution" to his keep, when he first went to work for Ronnie. Emma told Ed (who wanted to pay rent) "No, they're family. That's what families do, don't they? They help you when you need it. We're not paying rent!"

If Tom pays rent why didn't he mention it when he was talking to Brenda about being able to afford a mortgage, ie 'and I won't have rent to pay any more' like normal people would?

I dont think either Helen or Tom pay rent.... I think Pat feels that by helping out with the family business..... pulling the odd carrot and washing a leak!! they are paying their way.

Roy and Hayley will and contribute to food bills but I dont think Brenda will she cant have any money at all can she? I know my student offspring havent any dosh!
Fallon too hasnt any money to pay rent- she's still at college and I reckon they pay her for some of the time she works in the pub as pocket money.
Emma hasnt any money either but she probably helps around the house- andSoosan is probably making her put Georges allowance in a post office account so he can buy the ladder advertised in the village shop!!
