Sorry....I'm sure this has been covered before. But I've always been astonished that two such boring, I mean conventional, people as Phil'n'Jill should have chosen such unusual names for their kids.....
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
it has been covered before - lots! - and i've seen lots of replies making up the answer because they get bored with writing the same thing..
But the official answer is that phil and jill couldn't decide on names so threw some children's alphabet blocks in the air. with the resultant letters (and some additional vowels) they made up the names shula and kenton..
I think the production team actually carried out this experiment as well, but I'm willing to be corrected!

Re message 2:
Are you really sure about the building blocks, or is that an "urban myth" that has grown up around the myth that is "The Archers"?
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
It is indeed an urban (or rural myth). According to Vanessa Whitburn's seminal work 'The Archers, 50 Everyday Years' (Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú publications, 2001), "the origins of Shula and Kenton's names has now passed into Archers mythology and the mists of time".

Jill opened a copy of the London A to Z at random and Phil pinned it up on the pantry door. Jill then threw three darts at it while blindfolded. The only one to hit the book landed in Kenton (North West london)
Phil snipped several letters from the Borchester Echo. Put them on the floor and threw dried beans. The letters that the beans landed on were rearranged to make the name Shula
It's true!
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
Kenton is named after the area of West London where the twins were conceived and Shula is Hebrew for a bad headache (Phil thought it was Hebrew for something else but he was mistaken.)

Phil and Jill used a ouija board when they noticed small horns [later removed by Bert Fry rubbing a bit of bacon rind on them] on Shulas head.
This gave them the names but they are still mystyfied by the message, 'Lakey Hill, wicker heifer'.

I can confirm the building blocks story - I remeber the episode.

Well I'm sure, being old enough to have heard and vividly remember the episode in question.

in the spirit of the native american indians, they named the babies after the first thing they saw.
as there were two children, they made 2 names out of, 'naked lush on ant'.

Everyone knows it was a typing error.
They were meant to be called Kevin and Sheila.

Yes this explaination about building blocks always sounds incredibly implausible to me. What were Phil and Jill doing with childrens building bricks before they had children? Anyway it would be so out of character for both of them.
I'd like to know when the particular episode was as well.
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
Didn't you get given all kinds of toys/used baby equipment/hardly worn baby clothes, when you were expecting children? Or was it just because I was a teacher, and people had the idea I could do with the input, that I got given such stuff? Including alphabet bricks!

The "building blocks" episode was in August 1958, just after the twins' birth, and very close to my 9th birthday. A birth in the family and the proximity of my own birthday are probably what made it stick in my memory.

How about just after they were born (Aug '58). I was 15!

Well I think I'll go on believing Vanessa, she's usually reliable on all things Archers.
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
My parents had a friend whose christian name was Kenton and who pre-dated The Archers by about 30 years.
Not sure about Shula. I always assumed that it was a mispronunciation of Sula, an abbreviation of Ursula or part of the Latin name for the gannet.
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
I assumed that you wanted the storyline reason - rather than the real reason. You would have to ask the original author's for that.

Not an urban (or rural) myth at all - remember the episode well. Remeber thinking it would have been much more interesting if my mum and dad has used the same method for naming my little brother, who is roughly a contemporary of K and S.
VW seems to be off track on this one.......
Link to this forum: Where do Kenton and Shula's names come from?!
''''''''' & Vanessa probably wasn't born when this episode went out.
Anyway, I'm sure that the real Reggie Trentham was around at the time and, with a secret service agent for a wife, should have known this - so I think that the correspondent is an imposter!!!!!!!!

Kenton and Shula aren't such outrageous names are they?
My neice, Clarence Glottlestop-Knickerot has pet hamsters who also are named such.
She has a pony called David aswell!
