When Brian was gored or whatever by the Grundy's BSE infected cow he was very badly affected and suffered for years with what I think was a form of epilepsy. He was certainly unable to drink for years.
In a recent episode we heard him quaffing single malts with Matt and he often drinks now. His illness is never mentioned and I don't even remember it coming up when he had the car crash. Was it a permenant condition, have we ever been told that he has been cured or has there just been an intervention by the health fairy?
Can I just say how heartily sick I am at references to this that and the other fairy, which are often thrown around with no acknowledgement of the research which lies behind our storylines.
Brian had post-traumatic epilepsy. Once he was symptom-free for two years, he was allowed to drive again, and to drink (though not at the same time, obviously).
Thank you Mr K. and my apologies, I didn't realise how much that expression annoyed you. I appreciate that an enormous amount of research goes into the Archers. I was just using it as shorthand for an issue I couldn't remember being resolved on air.
Also, Jenny did express her worries about the chance that he might have more epileptic fits, at the time of the Siobhán-induced car-crash.
In fairness though, I think a lot of this comes from the fact that a couple of years after the accident (which was result of Brian suddenly deciding to stand for the County Council - is he still interested?) the script editor of the time came on and said that in no way would this condition be quietly forgotten, as had happened under her predecessors.
Given that, it would be fair enough if there had been some conversation on the programme about Brian been given the all-clear to drive etc, but did this occur?
well, I think it did. I seem to recall Brian celebrating with a glass of red wine.
[I had a friend whose sister had a similar condition, at the same time]
I should say, Reggie, no offence to you personally. You just happened to place that final straw on this weary camel's back :o)
and none taken Mr K.

Ah, thanks Rosie - glad to be corrected!
I must have been out that night! ; )
When was Brian gored? I don't recall this.

I seem to think that he was charged rather than gored, Norma.
Don't recall that blood was shed, but I may have tuned the grisly bits out.

A mad Grundy cow showed excellent poltical judgement: it kicked Brian in the head when he was canvassing as Conservative candidate for Borsetshire County Council.
Stanger than his recovery from the illness, though, has been Brian's total lack of eagerness to take part in political activity since. Maybe the experience just put him off....
