I am a new listener to The Archers, I got hooked about 3 months ago, I listen in from Spain!!! My question is does Ambridge really exsist? Now dont laugh..... Lillian talks about going shopping to Stratford, is that Stratford on Avon? Many Thanks.

MRSBOTARELL, Ambridge itself is a fictional village in the fictional Midlands county of Borsetshire. It is molded in the image of Inkberrow which is a real village in Worcestershire.
Interestingly though the characters are able to pop in and out of the fictional world into the real one which you and I inhabit, perhaps there is some sort of spatial votex they use. So yes Lilian was referring to Stratford on Avon although why anyone would go there to shop I am not sure.

Thinking about it, there are some reasonably firm boundaries between the TA and the real world. The cricket team are going to Edgbaston, Matt goes to London sometimes, he'll be taking Lilian to NY, Ian took Daniel to see Ason Villa play in Birmingham one evening, Debbie works in Hungary, Kate in South Africa & Ruth (didn't) s**g Sam in Oxford.
Basically TA and RW are identical all bar the substitution of the county of Worcestershire (& all it contains) with the fictional Borsetshire.

Wouldn't dream of laughing.. but, have you ever seen a film called Brigadoon?
Stratford exists, bin there, London, lived there...
AMBRIDGE... Coo. even the locals live in a sort of Midwitch cuckoo.. sort of forcefield which prevents visitors crossing the Am.

Never mind Spain, there are people listening in USA, Canada, Australia Holland,Italy France.......but how many are still listening all over UK now? How are the latest listening figures shaping up I wonder!

I think it must be an 'anomaly' as in 'Primeval' (a TV programme, for those of you who actually have a life and somewhere to go on a Saturday night and so haven't seen it). Do you think we should get the Home Office to send their finest officers down to close the anomaly so there is no danger of contaminating the RL world with TA.

Not really. The Old Bull in Inkberrow is definitely the model for The Bull in Ambridge but no one village is the model for Ambridge.

The Church, St. Stephens is modelled on Hanbury church near Droitwich (it's the one in the pictures) and I think they use the bells.

And of course Nigel and Ruth are modelled respectively on Lord Snooty and Pansy Potter.

I don't care what any of you say - of course Ambridge is real. Otherwise who would feed the animals?

Oh Reggie, that really made me snork. I'd forgotten all about Pansy Potter. You've really cheered me up after getting a little too immersed in the Light a Candle thread. Thank you.
I did wonder! I passed through Inkberrow recently, and the place is being slowly submerged in red brick new homes at a rate which suggest that Matt Crawford is operating locally. Though they do have a spiffy new surgery which the denizens of Ambridge must fantasize about.
About which...
Thanks very much for the info Polly. I will continue to listen, I´m finding it tricky to remember who is who.....Thanks again.
Don't worry about temembering who is who, it'll sink in if you give it time.
