I understand the vicar recently appealed for funds by giving cash away. Can anyone help with when this was and what precisely he did? Ruth

Can't remember how much they raised or when it was (but I bet I know someone who does). He ran a courier service on his motorbike including a trip to London with an errand for Matt with Usha riding pillion.

He gave each of the congregation £5.00, and said they were to use it to make money, eg, he paid for£5.00 of petrol, and did jobs (eg shopping, errands) for people, who gave him a contribution to the stained glass window fund. He kept this up (using some money to fund the petrol etc) until the time was up, then sent the money to the fund.

Many people bought ingredients, cooked and sold their produce.

It was based on the parabel of the talents, and amusingly dubbed The talent competition.

Not sure when, but round about the time Sophie came to the Brookfield dinner party as it was the topic of conversation there (so September/October last year?). Based on the parable of the talents, where a certain amount of money (think Alan gave £5 or £10) is given away to others who are tasked with increasing that money and in the end the profits are given back to to the church. To explain - Clarrie took her money and bought cake ingredients. She baked, sold the cakes and made some profit on her original outlay. With this she buys more ingredients, makes more cakes etc, hopefully ending up with a tidy profit. Eddie placed his on a dodgy racehouse whilst Joe sold rides in his pony & trap (original money said to help feed and water Bartleby)
