There's Amy as well, a protestant certainly but not of the white Anglo-Saxon variety.

There's some Irish blood around too...

Siobhan, half of Ruairi, half of Adam (!)

Kate's husband doesn't live within the Ambridge community, nor does the Irish element and they could still be Protestant. I just wondered is all. Never heard of any story line involving a strong faith element except maybe Anglican. I wonder how acceptable it would be in this politically correct era if they married off Alan and Usha. I bet Alan would have to give up his post as vicar and become a social worker.

I think it is perfectly reasonable for a fictional English village to be populated mainly by WASPS.

Most real English villages are, like it or not, overwhelmingly white if not entirely so and most English villagers (in most parts of the country) are Anglican if they practice any religion at all. There is the odd Methodist (Joe Grundy allegedly), the odd Catholic (None apparently permenantly resident in Ambridge, the odd atheist (Caroline) and a large majority of apathetic non-observers or agnostics (Jennifer mentioned Brian and Adam on Sunday).

I think this is an intance of the SWs accepting reality and not being politically correct.

'Fictional' being the operative word but times are changing, even in English villages with incomers buying up properties for weekend retreats, holiday homes etc. We live in a multicultural society which extends to English villages. Ambridge seems to be stuck in a time warp.

Er, Adam lives in the village and Ruairi may be coming soon...

I don't think southern Irish blood is Anglo Saxon, thought wait to be corrected.

I take your point about the religion thing, but I would say that in my village-type neck of the woods there are very few people around practising any religion which is not CofE or Catholic.

PS Pat is Welsh, so probably Celt (?!, and I'm pretty sure that she is not a fan of organised religion, though she did go on a retreat once.

PPS If you went back far enough, quite a lot of so-called W.A.S.Ps would find that their DNA came from very different parts of the world

It has of course been established that Ian is from a Protetant family. But not the other two.
