Catwomyn and I are lounging around Posh towers, having acheived a book cull. [6 Biggles and a Bunter for Sharpers, box of chick lit for charridee] and we were musing away....
How did Mike lose his eye?
My money is on a tree related incident, Cat is claiming 'no idea'.

Wasn't it an accident involving a hydraulics or pneumatic pipe that flew off when he was disconnecting it (or somesuch)?

It was a hydraulic pipe that snapped from the back of a tractor. (1991)

AFAIR he blamed Brian for passing the tractor on to him without connecting the hoses properly, until it was pointed out that it was his own responsibility to check everything before starting the engine. He's been in a bad mood ever since.

Brian was kicked on the head by one of Joe Grundy's cows years ago, perhaps that explains his present troubles.

They wouldn't have arisen if the cow had the decency to kick him a little lower down...

Cows. Can't trust them to do anything right (except prefer a Grundy to Ruth).
Returning to Mike, the summary matches my memories, although TBOTA blames Jim Ascott (whoever he was) for starting the tractor. Mike certainly got compensation for his injury.
