Wot dedded John Archer.
What colour was it?
This is to settle a [good-natured] argument that came about as a result of the Salford Meet Quiz. And before anyone starts, yes we figured it was red *after* the accident. We want to know about *before*, thank you very much.
Ta ever so.
Cat x
Tony always referred to it as 'the Fergie' so I assume it was a Massy-Ferguson so it must have been red. Unless of course it was just a Ferguson in which case I think it would have been grey.
Ta ever so. We knew it was a Massey F, but none of us knew they were always red.
We did countenance it being grey, which would make it more difficult for John to have seen it in a grey sky, a scenario considered likely what with Moany being too tight to pay for any paint other than the primer.
Cat x
All the old Ferguson tractors I've ever known have been grey.
Beat me to it, Cat.
Still unresolved, though.
If it was a Massey ferguson it was probably red.
If it was a Ferguson it was probably grey.
Will I be forced to surrender the La Sharpissima Memorial Napkin if it goes against me?

My 1950s tractor was red. (Dinky Toy.)
So was mine mike, but it was a Massey-Harris. At that time Massey-Harris and Ferguson were separate companies and their respective colours were red and grey.
When the two companies amalgamated to become Massey-Ferguson it adopted the red of Massey-Harris which it still uses.
I'm not really a farm machinery geek, my uncle worked on a farm and I spent many happy holidays there. Also, like mike, I was a keen collector of Dinky toys.

Sad person that I am, I actually have two photos of a Ferguson.
Never thought they'd come in handy!
I seem to remember John and Tony always referring to it as the Fergie, and this is how I'd imagined it: (before it went in the ditch!)

Fergusons in The Archers
The grey Ferguson tractor has had an uncannily big part in the plot of the long-running Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 4 serial, The Archers. Apart from appearing in this 1953 publicity shot of Walter Gabriel (Robert Mawdesley) and Mrs Perkins (Pauline Seville), above, in more recent times, it also caused the death of young farmer John Archer (Sam Barriscale), below.
