I think it's that everyone there is Silent. So it seems to have become a catch all - "those people form Grange Spinney" mentioned all the time starts being a bit funny.

What about Hollowtree Flats then? The residents there are a category beyond 'silents', they never even get a mention.

Interesting ... a Silent estate ... sounds rather sinister(!) ... but why are folks always protesting that it *should* be called "Badger's Leap" and nor GS?

I think that Hollowtree Flats has been airbrushed out, like a number of other places. I remember a few months ago, in response to a query, Keri posted here that somewhere (? The Manor House?) had been removed when they made a "definitive" map of Ambridge several years ago.
That mused me no end - reminded me of the "definitive version of Kipling" being produced in Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the poor chap working on it who gets in trouble with the Thought Police for including the wrod "God" .

"Badger's Leap" was the ML name for the development before it was built and named. It is a sort of p*ss take of the very rural names that developers often give to suburban sprawl.
Rather like in my village - three new houses have been built and cutely named Cherry Cottage, Apple Cottage and Orchard Cottage. Which is not wholly inaccurate, as it was an orchard that they chopped down to build the houses....

Yes, and "Grange Spinney" is a wonderful name for it, as yhou can just see all the flimsy white spindles and gleaming curvy fascia-boards that undoubtedly adorn the houses. Especially when Susan says the name in her "special" voice.....

Kindmrslovely,
and, of course, the name has been commemorated by our very own Leaping Badger.
