When did Edward (?), Nigel's dad die?

Was he ever in TA? Even as a (living) silent?

I get the impression that he was a lot older than his showgirl wife, but she was getting on a bit, so what would that make him?

Can't find an age for Gerald ... information seems to be attended Rugby School (as did Nigel), enjoyed hunting/country living, married to Joan/Julia, produced two children (Nigel and Camilla), died on 28th April 1988. Since Julia was 34 when Nigel was born (not sure whether Camilla was older or younger) take your pick as to how much older/younger Gerald might have been.

Although he seems to have not been assiduous in his stewardship of the Pargetter/Lower Loxley finances I don't remember hearing anyone speak ill of him.

    Wow Sheena

    Impressive.

But did anyone speak about him at all?

As I recall it Nigel was sort of parachuted in as a silly Hooray (Phil disapproved). Julia followed, as (much later and not very often) the late Gerald.

I always got the impression that Pargetter Senior was quite a bit older than Julia (old dog falls for young actress). A little known fact is that Gerald hung about the stage door in BRIDLINGTON, sending in red roses, and eventually a fur coat (possibly made from the foxes he had killed on the hunting field).

Nigel was portrayed as a particularly silly but kind-hearted young man, until his father died, and he realised he would have to Face up to his Responsibilities.

Gerald Pargetter died of alcohol related illness, I believe. He was a 'silent' as was Julia until they decided to turn her into a Dame Edith Evans type.

I also recall that the Pargetters just about managed to live in one room in Lower Loxley House, so Nigel really has done remarkably well despite never having shown any business acumen, etc. etc.

Of all the unrealities around TA, the rebirth of Pargetter Towers takes the biscuit.

One would have thought the death duties on the Pargetter estate when Nigel's father died must either have been crippling or that there was hardly anything left. Either way the continued survival of LL without being sold stretches credibility a bit.

Providing that Nigel's father left the estate to Julia, his wife, then inheritance tax would have been avoided.

A clever tax lawyer could minimise the amount of duty payable on Julia's death, but certainly a fair amount would be payable.

Don't forget that Nigel spent a few months working in The City where he made a fortune (presumably enough to rescue LL).

So your comments about his business acumen are obviously unfounded!

This was at a time when a moderately talented chimp could have made money in the City. And indeed many did...

Good grief - I didn't know that! not with Barings Bank I hope. Must have been when I was walking out with Mrs Morgan or otherwise engaged of an evening. I've learned something this evening, I'm glad I stayed in.

I stand corrected and thank you for your trouble. I still think he's ludicrous.

Particularly with the prospect of Nigel behind the wheel of any earth-moving equipment. I don't think he could have done so much damage with the Mr Whippymobile.

I thought that Gerald P died from cancer - possibly lung cancer, making him in fact the last person from greater Ambridge to do so before Shove shoved off. And although I have no desire at all for the level of gritty reality to reflect the statistical probabilities of the rest of the world, I have often thought what a pleasant healthy haven Borsetshire must be. Apart from the risk of getting crushed under cows or tractors of course.

But would that have been enough to keep Lizzie in the style to which she has become accustomed? Vast expense seems to have been used in making the Gallery, shop etc., But of course they don't pay their guides, do they?

Surely Nigel made his fortune from his Mr. Snowy ice cream van days?
