Can anybody remind me where "one of the wealthiest women" in Ambridge acquired her money? As far as I remember she sold The Bull but that's all and quite a long time ago. Thanks.
Gosh, I'm amazed - I wasn't pre modded. Have only been on the boards a couple of weeks. First time its happened. Just waiting for the flea now.
Welcome to Mustardland, RGS.
Peg's Mum, Mrs P, had 2 husbands & dies a widow so would have left Peg property & money.
Peggy is an only child, IIRC.
I think Jack Archer had a financial settlememt from Dan when it was decided the farm could not support Phil & Jack & their families.
The Bull would have appreciated greatly over the years & she will have made a profit when she sold it.
Of course, she is the wife of the local millionaire too!
Thanks PB.
Didn't know about Jack 1's settlement, realized about Jack 2 but they always say she's monied in her own right. Listening years ago, never had the impression that Mrs P was rich, (perhaps it was the "Eastend" tag both of them were given) but then again that doesn't stop her being wealthy.
Regards.

Didn't Aunt Laura buy the Bull for them? Or own it then leave it to them? Then she sold it to Caroline. Or something. Dx
I think Caroline became involved after Peggy's time, did she inherit her share from Guy? Or something.

Ah - she inherited Guy's bit and then bought out Peggy or something? Dx
I can't remember Mrs P. being rich. We were always led to believe that she was 'in service'. This, I estimate, would have been just after the First World War. Unless, of course, she started a tradition among Archer, or near Archer women, of marrying money.
Perkins no 2 was a stonemason & certainly had a house.
Can't remember anything about Perkins No 2.
Meant Perkins No 1, obviously.
I know Mrs P came to Ambridge as a widow.

Nor can I. In fact, I'd have seen her as someone who might re-use her tea-leaves out of necessity, as well as from ingrained thrift. But if she were rich, how would we have known? A colour T.V. ahead of her time?
There were suggestions that Peggy engaged in business activities on her own behalf?
VH
Surely the accepted wisdom (in ML at least) is that Peggy started off "comforting" GIs whilst her mother "helped out" young girls in trouble.
This later led to Peggy being one of the biggest Madames in the Midlands.
Or have I been misinformed?
bob
I think she sold the Bull for £175,000 to Sid/Caroline.
Jack Archers great aunt (Aunt Laura) was the source of his wealth, arriving in Ambridge from NZ awash with money and determined to make trouble by setting Jack against Phil. I think she gave Jack £10K which would have bought an asset now worth perhaps a million.
Clearly administering corrective treatment to wealthy but badly-behaved business men under her stage name of Miss W helps as well.
Sid and Kathy were only able to buy the Bull from Peggy with Guy Pemberton's help. When Guy died he left his share in the Bull to Caroline. Caroline put in more money (and became majority shareholder) when Sid had to finance his divorce settlement. Caroline has now sold her share to Lilian.

You are Jeck Wooley and I claim my er... um... PEGGOI?!?
Peggy (better known as 'Mistress Margaret to her select clientèle) ran a very discreet house of correction in the post-war years having learnt her trade in the Soho of the 1940s.
This is where she gained her imperious and haughty manner and faux upper-middle class accent in order to impress the MPs, clergy and minor nobility who availed themselves of her services before her semi-retirement to Ambridge. (It is likely that she had some dealings with Gerald Pargeter and it was this link that brought her to the area).
Mistress Margaret did revert to type a few years ago when stating she 'wanted to horse-whip' Brian Aldridge. However, as she'd passed the tools of her trade on to her former apprentice/ingénue
'Miss Elizabeth' at the home of her former client
this was not possible.
Miss Elizabeth now oversees the 'business' in the basement of Lower Loxley House and the resurrected
but expensively equipped former Hellfire club dungeon brings an income stream which underwrites the loss making enterprises elsewhere in the stately home.
Quite what Bert Froi would make of this is unknown but no doubt he's make up a poem and conduct a
customer satisfaction survey.
Best answer to date, B G, thanks.
(But I don't believe a word of it!)
