How long has Freda been 'in' the Archers and is she the only longstanding member of the cast who has never spoken?

1. For as long as Bert has (since 1988).
2. There are many, many silent characters (more than the number of speakers) although most of them get only one mention. The number of regularly mentioned silent characters varies from year to year.
Which raises the question, who is the longest standing silent ie someone who has never spoken not someone like Marjorie Antrobus who has fallen silent? My guess would be Freda Fry but I'm probably wrong.

John Higgs has been around since the 60s and (to forestall the obvious point) an occasional grunt or the sound of him falling from a tree doesn't destroy his silent status!
Thanks mike, of course it's got to be hasn't it? I think it's only when a word is spoken that the transition is made.
Who is the longest silent character who used to speak? By that, I mean a speaking character who has 'gone' silent, but has not died or moved away from Ambridge. I would guess Marjorie, followed by Chris. I know the actress who played Marjorie unfortunately died, but as far as I know, we have never been told if there is any reason for the silence of Aunty Chris. She does not seem to be mentioned any more, not even sitting with Jack or having a meal with her brother and sister in law.
I don't think Margot Boyd is dead but she is about 95.
I agree with you about Auntie Cardboard.

Aunty Chris was mentioned as sitting with Jack a few months ago. We've not heard from Wayne Foley (of Radio Borsetshire) for a much longer time than Aunty Chris. How is he?
Heather Pritchard?

I see your Heather Pritchard and I raise you a Jean Harvey.
And I'd like to confirm that national treasure Margot Boyd is still alive.

Why is Aunty Chris referred to as Aunty Cardboard?
"And I'd like to confirm that national treasure Margot Boyd is still alive."
I am so glad to hear this. She was/is my No.1 favourite character: funny, kind, sassy, strongwilled. I loved her story lines and her voice. Is there ANY chance that we might hear from her again? I had assumed that she was poorly or perhaps too frail to travel to record ... but perhaps she's too busy skateboarding or being a burlesque dancer.
Is it possible to contact any of the actors... I mean with fan mail, not to stalk them???

I can't remember the name of Marjorie's Archers husband but I think it may have been Teddy. Anyway, I remember an episode many years ago (perhaps twenty five) when Marjorie was talking to someone or other about the time Teddy went tiger shooting in East Africa. This casused a flurry of comment amongst listeners (there were no message boards in those days). I think it was discussed on Disgusted Tonbridge Wells (predecessor to Feedback) as it was pointed out that there were no tigers in Africa.
The then producer (or editor, or whoever) explained this away by saying that there wasn't now, as Teddy had shot them all!!
