I read a story on t'interweb in a facebook group on The Archers that *a* Clarrie had left the show after an argument with the producer over being offered as a prize at a convention, I guess this is true but what I want to know is how they introduced the new and presumably present Clarrie, who I like very much btw.

I think this is the third Clarrie actually, the other two being Heather Bell and Fiona Mathieson. Usually they write someone out of the script for a long time and then re-introduce them.

Forty or fifty years ago they always used to do it by making the new actor's first appwearance a phone call. Can't remember how they introduced the latset Clarrie though. Perhaps she went on an extended visit to see Rosie (her sister not our one).

Ok, thanks Reggie, 3 clarries! that is a surprise, this story relates to 21 yrs ago according to the anecdote I read.

There have in fact been 3 Clarries: Clarrie#1 (Heather Bell) left the programme after the prod team refused to give her permission to attend the funeral of Joe#2 (Haydn Lones) (she was required for recording); Clarrie#2 (Fiona Mathieson) committed suicide and was replaced by Rosalind Adams.

In each case the new actor was introduced to replace the old with no particular fanfare. Although I like the new Clarrie, she sounds nothing like the previous Clarries and she's not the REAL Clarrie! (But Eddie seems to have accepted her which is what counts, I suppose.)

    <(Fiona Mathieson) committed suicide>

    Oh that is a shame.

To me the current Clarrie is the real one as I've not been listening for terribly long, well not in any real sense as I've always heard it from time to time.

    Thanks Mike.

I must admit I think the 3 Clarries have sounded very similar.
Clarrie (Fiona Mathieson) was my favourite. The episode when she gave birth to Willyum (sure it was her - 1983?) was 2 days after my first was born and I cried buckets - and did OH!
A wonderful memory, one you won't get now unless you make your name an anagram, write reviews..........yawn...........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I didn;t think they were that similar

I heard an old archive clip (regarding Phil's beard) and a character was admiring it - she sounded quite quiet and almost mousey (if I may use that word). Only when she said "moi Edday" did I realise it was a previous Clarrie. I've heard all 3 but didn't remember her voice at all

I think the greatest vocal liberties were taken with Dan. Obviously too strong a character to allow death or infirmity to see him off, there were four actors I believe over the years, with Frank Middlemass being the last 'To Serve Them All My Days' and lots of other stuff already under his belt. Wasn't there something about a throat op. between one Dan and another?

A good character Dan, all in all.
