Can anybody tell me what the correct pronunciation of 'Barwick' is, please?
'Barwick'- bar as in The Bull + wick as in candle
Or
'Barrick'as in a soldier's base?
Thanks
Confused but anxious to get it right.

Another vote for bar-wick from me. Have only heard Beeb people refer to it as such, never as in Alnwick or Berwick.
There was something on ML a little while ago, I think, that said it was pronounced Berrick Green. Can't remember the exact thread - think it was one complaining about that new soup ad that played it?
I think I've always heard it called bar-wick.
Keith
Wendy lives near Barwick, and it is pronounced "Barrick." I think.

And Robert Robinson - a northerner despite appearances - pronounced it as Barrick when there was a question about it on B of B.
We've always said Bar-wick, but have recently learned from a relative (daughter?) of the composer that he called it Barrick.

Thank you, Mr. Keri, & everybody who responded. I guess if the composer said 'Barrick' then that's the pronumciation that should be used.
Dum di dum di dum di dum . . .

Hello All
For once I feel ble to help in this debate. The tune is named after a small village on he outskirts of Leeds called Barwick in Elmete. It is famous for its Maypole and the taditions associated with it.My Husbands mother is from said village and it is DEFINITELY pronounced
Ba-Rick.
I hope this puts an end ton all debate on this subject
LadyE
That's exactly what Wendy said, a bit further up, my link message 8, her message 6 in the thread.
