Can I propose a different button to reply to a thread in general, rather than to a specifc message?
In threads on this and other boards, people (me included) often click the Reply button when adding to the thread as a whole, or replying to the first post or one somewhere in the middle. THis means there's a 'this is a reply to this message' which is often misleading. The case can be aggravated when the poster uses Jont's script which adds the name of the previous poster. This can cause confusion and sometimes bad feeling as messages are misinterpreted.
My suggestion then is to keep the 'Reply to this message' button but also have a 'reply to thread' next to it. Where the thread button is used, there should be no 'this is a reply to this message' at the bottom of the post.
Responses welcome regarding desirability/feasibility of this suggestion

Alternately, just suppress the "This is in reply to..." on replies to the first post on the thread. When there's only one reply they are superfluous, and people wanting to comment on the thread as a whole need only reply to the first post.

This is a very sensible idea and can definitely avoid mis-understandings.

Peet, agreed that your approach would work, provided that people go back to Post #1 when contributing to the thread in general.
But I frequently respond to the last message only, because I'm naturally lazy.

I feel there is another way:

fieldpenguin, they could duplicate the first post's "Reply" button at the bottom of the thread, thus making us both happy.

There, I would say, is probably the problem
As there is no facility to reply to the thread in general I've always been of the opinion that posts that are intended to be a general comment on the subject of the thread in general should always be made by replying to the opening post.
Do you use a tabbed browser? If so then you could always leave the first page of the thread open in one tab and read the remainder of the thread in another tab.. if you later decide you want to reply to the thread in general (rather than - or in addition to - any specific posts) then the reply link of the opening post will be just a tab click away.
While on the subject of tabs and in case it's of any interest, I always have my discussion list and those thread-lists (eg: The Bull, Notes & Queries) that I'm interested in permanently open in their own tabs and always open threads (by clicking the relevant links with the mouse-wheel) in new tabs. Similarly, when I reply to a post I do that in a new tab.. thereby allowing one to quickly review the thread while you are composing your reply.

If I want to reply to a particular message as opposed to simply chipping in with the general movement of the thread (as here), I simply say which message I'm replying to, or quote a bit of it. On threads like this, where there aren't several conversations going on at the same time, it doesn't seem to matter much.

But once a thread gets very long it's not really laziness is it - the whole thread can have moved on from the initial topic, so a reply to the first post would look as if the intervening subjects are not included or have been ignored.

Me too. It's great that my discussions refreshes when I want - the next thing would be for TB etc to do that too! (Never 'appy, me.)
