Does anyone else remember Joe Grundy used to be a Methodist? He used to talk to Martha about it, and didn't join in with the churchgong lot, but I don't remember where the chapel was? It seems a shame he doesn't still have links and friends in a chapel somewhere. I am sure I remember it, or was he perhaps just pretending to impress her?

Iirc Joe's Methodism was mainly a way of getting out of going to St Stephens on Sundays and/or contributing to church funds. I'm not sure whether he ever attended an actual Methodist chepel.

"Joe regards himself as a religious man. St. Stephens lost him to the methodist chapel in Little Croxley in 1984. Soon after, he could be seen going around the pubs collecting 'for the little boys in Africa.' "

Yes indeed. The Methodists of Ambridge have been quietly exterminated to make way for the outrageous product placement by the Church of England.

I remember Joe talking about being a Methodist. He was very proud of it and I have often wondered why he never mentions it now. The Church of England does not hold such a significant place in any village I have known. It is quite unrealistic and has always struck a very false note for me.

Thank-you for that little gem, ruaridh, I am going to store it up for future use, hope that is OK.

I admit to vested interest. As I write this I look at my framed certificate from the Methodist Church in Ireland for 'superior answering' in the Sunday School examinations of 1958. Something my over-achieving children do not have.

Not overachieving enough, if they've failed to get certificates from a year they were unborn in.

Well obviously Joe hasn't mentioned his Methodism since he read the book by that Dawkins chap and became an atheist ...

Wow, if all it takes to convert a person to atheism is to get them to read Dawkin's book, I will break open my piggy bank and send a copy to Shula, Peggy, Bert, Alan, Christine, Susan etc., etc. What the heck, I will also send a copy of Christopher Hitchens' book as well.
