I had conflated Keeper's Cottage and Casa Nueva. Now I'm all in a muddle and I don't know where Casa Nueva, formerly Sammy Whipple's cottage, is? Anyone know?

It is on Home Farm land (don't know exactly where, though).

Thanks mike..., had another look on the map. I'm wondering if it is quite isolated.

Thanks for asking this, PatienceB. As you might have gathered from the thread in TA, I'm very confused about it, and feel that, in this case, the map doesn't help me see the wood for the trees. I still think it's buried in primal forest somewhere. Will darts out whenever he gets a sniff of poachers, so it must be just downwind of the pheasant runs.
I get that impression too, Elnora.
"Casa Nueva" (never was a miserable hovel so badly misnamed) squats at the heart of a deep, dark, dank wood. Only rarely does the sun penetrate the canopy; most of the time the cottage is sunk in gloom. No birds sing there. The only sounds are of water dripping from the branches and Will cursing his brother - oh, and the screams of a distant poacher, caught in a trap and left to starve.
I give Nic three months at the outside.

Ah, Vicarshusband, we are of one mind: see message 99 here:
Elnora - still in the dark.

Wonderful atmospheric posts Vicarshusband and Elnora; or should I say "you two". Still no closer to knowing where the dreadful place is, but having fun imagining it.

I don't think it has a definite location, Patience. Sometimes you find it. Sometimes you don't. Sometimes it's here, sometimes there. If you're very unlucky, you find a path to it, but you can't find how to get away; the trackways spiral back and you're lost in the woods, alone.

Only dogs and poachers can sniff it out. Emma once hung up a basket of flowers by the door. Still there, withered and black.

Perhaps it moves around like the hut on chicken legs of Russian folk tales.

Was that Baba Yaga's hut?
Anyway, Casa Nueva is indeed on Home Farm land, near Leader's Wood.

At the moment, maybe. Tomorrow - who knows?

The cottage is in a clearing where the sun never shines. A grimy net curtain at the window twitches occasionally and the gate bangs in the wind. Outside, on a barbed wire fence, hang dead animals, their fur stiff with dried blood. The only sound is the shriek of an owl deep in the woods....

Moonlight struggles to penetrate a deep low lying mist, the creak and groan of...

... a whispering voice from the trees seems to say "Helen... Helen..." - or was it just that creaking gate into the wood?

... and like Baba Yaga's hut, it moves - Nic can never quite find her way back there because it is never in quite the same place.

it is never in quite the same place. Cue the Mobile Home Fairy!
As Nic was going from Casa Nueva to the shop and passed the Grundy house can we assume it's down that way ?

If you look at the Interactive Map (link on the left) you will initially see the shop on the village green. Then if you scroll to the right (i.e. travel due East) you go past Keeper's Cottage where the Grundy's live. If you scroll farther to the right you come to Home Farm, Leaders Wood etc which is where Casa Neuva is. So, yes, the Grundys do live on Nic's route from home to the village shop.
