Is it possible to find out who is catpeeing multiple messages on DTA? This afternoon it seems to be reaching epidemic proportions. Someone is clearly having great fun making a complete nuisance of themself.
I wonder if someone is missing the button at the bottom for the "reply to" ..I'm no typist so have to look carefully before I press anything.
That's a very charitable view, H, but while I can see how somebody could press the wrong button by mistake, I can't see how they could proceed to report a post while thinking all the time that they were simply posting a reply, nor can I see how the moderators wouldn't realise that that was what was happening.
Is there a penalty for frivolous/ malicious complaining?
Of course it's hard to be sure without reading all the blocked posts, and you would hope the mods would spot this, but if the troll(s) or whoever is doing this use(s) multiple identities, and different mods deal with different instances, it might be very hard to spot.

I have never clicked on the triangle sign so have no idea what comes up on the screen to say what has been done.
I know when I try to delete something from email I get an "are you sure?" to confirm that is what I want.

A separate browser window appears with some instructions and [Cancel] and [Next-->] buttons on.
It's not a procedure you can accidentally do easily.. give it a try.. on this post if you like.. you can see how the process goes and cancel whenever.

Which brings me to a puzzle. The one and only time I have ever complained about something* it remained visible while the mods did their stuff - no "this has been temporarily hidden". Yet in the recent crop the messages have seemed to vanish immediately, while a decision is taken. Do certain complainants somehow have more pull with the mods than others?

*A post I saw as homophobic. I can't remember the details. Complaint was rejected.
studioj.
Thanks for the offer to allow me to try on your post.I won't take you up on that as I might end up doing something really silly. It's enough to know that it isn't easy to catpee, therefore not done by accident.
Sorry,, I assume that to "catpee" is the term for complaining.

yes, it's 'morphed' from what was once the Complain About This Post acronym CATP

No I won't, and really don't want to.
I see too much childish behaviour with my classes of 5-7 year olds to indulge in it myself. Sometimes I like to be with the grown ups who sort of know how to behave.

You don't have to be a registered user of the boards to complain. All you need is an email address.

Reg, if you update your script to the latest version you shouldn't ever have that happen again.
Also, in case you missed it, you might like to look here:

Hello G-J.
As from v1.26 the script will automatically remove the text "" from a post at the moment it is posted (at the same time it inserts the timestamp).
I've just had a quick peek at a couple of your previous posts and think you were on 1.26 anyway so you will probably not notice any difference - see the release notes for 1.27 to see what's changed for you (all release notes are at the bottom of the page of the main site).
So, if you forget to delete the "" manually then it gets deleted for you.. try it in a reply some time. I can include it in my posts 'cos as far as the script is concerned I am co-god.

Hmm.. that's curious.. your post seems to contain a "" and it shouldn't! (Unless that's cunningly different in some way I haven't spotted (only just finished 1st coffee of the day)).
Gosh.. I wonder what's wrong!? That doesn't make sense, 'cos your timestamp is being updated correctly.

There's nothing different about the that I typed - I think. Is it meant to find all occurrences of it and delete them all?

Aha.. don't panic.. I've just checked the script and it only zaps the first instance of "" that it finds.. so that would explain it!
Going for that much needed 2nd cup of coffee!

one thing i think i remember mr. k saying, was that he sees all attempted catpees, ie the ones that failed the mod test and were reinstated. so assuming the mad phantom cat pee-er has a good proportion turned down, he must get a rough idea of who is the most regular and often user of their trigger finger!
it's the hysterical assumption that all this complaining over the boards is being perpertrated by ONE person that is really the funniest thing that's happened in an age.
The people carrying out this seemingly concentrated and semi-prolonged attack of complaints must be laughing their collective heads off at all these posters on the Archers boards who are running around like headless chickens!
dnftc
(do not fuel the catpee-ers)
Is it a fact that every message removed by the mods is because someone has complained about the post or is someone actually keeping a sneaky eye on things to enforce the absolute letter of the House Rules?
I can't believe we have carte blanche on this board with no supervision or that some of the modding decisions are purely the result of a catpee rather than a robotic box-ticking exercise
There are times, now and again, when for example an ongoing court-case or the naughty behaviour of someone closer in line to the throne than fourth say, is the subject of discussion when it seems to me that the mods DO sit and read all posts but only after a certain number of posts in thos discussions are removed for some reason or another. Maybe the legal department gets a bit twitchy and puts them on high alert.
This could always be mere speculation that is incorrect though.
It's a fallacy that someone has been running riot with the Alert button. I have just posted this on DTA:
"I have to say, I'm rather unsympathetic to this suggestion that a phantom catpee-er ran amok and spoiled everybody's fun - especially because it is simply not true.
I have analysed the moderating activity that followed nesta's post. The problem arose entirely because people kept re-posting the message, which the moderators had deemed against the house rules.
Unsurprisingly, these posts were complained about and removed. Then people started abusing the "phantom catpe-er" in very unpleasant terms which were clearly against the house rules. What a surprise - those messages were removed as well.
None of this would have happened if you had simply accepted the mods' decision in the first place. Instead, we have seen days of something approaching hysteria.
It must stop, please. As I said two days ago: move on.
I am going to close this thread and really don't want to see any more discussion on this spurious subject."
yes very good point, rubbly. sorry hadnt thought i might sound hysterical.
ok mr. k. fair do's. i am still miffed though, and cannot simply accept the mods decision the other day, that a post i made was 'racist/religious abuse/insult,' or whatever the words are, for saying a composer was not known for his traditional songs, no matter what the topic he covered. outrageous insult to moi, acksherley. still, move on as you quite rightly say. merry christmas and a happy new year, old bean!
