Sorry, this is a bit of a long shot - but the first time I heard The Archers about 13 years ago the episode concerned a misunderstanding that the vicar ( I think - may have been the local doctor or similar) was romantically interested in a lady (sounded a bit like Julia, if I remember correctly - but perhaps not) who became terribly embarrassed when he told her that this wasn't the case. I think one of the characters concerned may have been about to leave the village, or did so shortly afterwards (out of embarrassment?). I realise this may be hopelessly vague, but now as a regular listener, I have always wondered who these characters were, the exact situation and whether or not it was a major plot. Does anyone have any idea?

IIRC it was Shula and Doctor Richard Locke. The doctor left shortly thereafter and Shula became the butt of village gossip for "driving him away".

Thanks Peet, but it was quite a few years before that. I think the two concerned were at a little going away (?) party with others and a letter may have been involved. Sorry, this is probably hopelessly recalled!
Could you be thinking of Robin Stokes, the vicar vet? He left about 13 years ago and had been in a relationship with Caroline before she broke it off.

Didn't they go away somewhere (venice?) and there was lots of anguish from Caroline because he wouldn't share a room?
Would never have worked anyway. He wasn't rich and at death's door. He didn't even own the Estate! She was only keeping in practice, as it were.

IIRC it was Brum VH, just before Christmas when Simon Rattle was in charge of CBSO. Is it better to be let down in Venice or Brum? Answers on a postcard please.
I wonder what happened to Robin and his little boys. The boys (Sam and something or other?) sounded quite jolly - rather a loss to Ambridge imo.

Sam and Ollie. They were jealous of C at first, then became very fond of her. You're right, they were nice boys.

Now why did I think Venice? Canals, perhaps!

Perhaps you are thinking of Don't Look Now.....
Be nice if Sam or Ollie showed up at Grey Gables to organise say their wedding reception?
I understood that the Rev Stokes' offspring had but one name between them: "Salmon Oliver"
An odd name but that's how he always referred to them.
And I understood that Carolines disappointment in Birmingham (which does, in fact, have a greater length of canals than Venice) was occasioned by Robin's (how can I put this delicately???) reluctance to demonstrate the strength of his feelings...
