I'm sure Keri will know, and Googlin' is not helpful, but is the writer Rob Gittins a relation of Chris Gittins (Walter Gabriel as was)?
Googlin' /does/ reveal that, prior to writing TV soaps, RG wrote 100 eppies of TA, which may be a clue.
VW's book has (1986)
" (Liz Rigby) ... immediately set about rebuilding the devestated writing team by luring Rob Gittins away from Eastenders ... "
so he was already a T.V. writer.

But 'Stenders started in '85 (I know as my daughter was meant to be Michelle's baby) so he can't have done that many.
He'd been "a Manchester writer of some 10 years experience," according to Smethurst, and had written radio plays when the EE producer ontacted him.
Not a relation as far as I know.
