Please help settle a dispute. Did the Carters ever pay Tom back the money they borrowed from him? I say they didn't. Fan says they did. He says it was after they heard that "Tom" (actually Helen) had hit Mike with a car.

Yes, he took the money and gave it back to Tom, in a field, saying he didn't want anything more to do with tom, when Tom had given up buying Neils pigs and sacked him, I thought? Susan didn't want to pay him anything.

Rosie, we knew you would know, and said so to each other! But it's interesting that it was after Neil was sacked, not on the later occasion. I thought at the time that they ought to have paid it back, but didn't think it had happened. How did they find the money?

    Your partner was right.
    Friday 5th January
    * Tony's not the only one fed up with sodden fields. Tom and Brenda struggle to shift the arks. Tom's not pleased when Brenda tells him about her encounter with Helen, and won't even think about telling the truth. To him, Helen is like a frightened child, and he must protect her. His mood is lifted when Neil appears with the £2500 he owes. At least something good has happened.

We never heard, though, how Neil managed to find the money.

We never heard, though, how Neil managed to find the money.  Didn't we hear that old saw, "I've been looking at the figures, Susan, and I reckon we can do it!" from Neil?

Rosie do you know that this was in settlement of the debt or just an installment? It seems a bit odd to me too that the Carters, hardly Ambridge's highest earners, could have repaid Tom's loan so easily especially with the size of morgage they must have on their house. Especially when Shula and Alistair, who must be some of Ambridge's highest earners, were huffing and puffing about the burden a one hundred thousand pound mortagage would be.

I don't think we can compare this to Shula and Alastair, Reggie. In their case (or at least Shula's) the issue seemed to be the absolute shame and disgrace of having a mortgage at all - where will it end - we'll be in the poorhouse if we don't watch out. In other words the amount of grizzling and moaning was nothing to do with the size of debt.

I'm assuming (based on the typical cost-overrun experience in "Grand Designs", my source for all such things) that the Carters are now effectively owned body and soul by their mortgage provider and will be the rest of their lives paying it back (while S&A could probably clear the debt in a few years).

Reggie, I remember he brought "all the rest I owe you," in cash, to Neil. There was speculation here, as to how he had managed to pay of the rest of the (I think) initial £10,000 loan, which Tom was taking out of his wages in installments, for such a short time until the business went into Briancevership.

Thanks for the extract, Rosie. Reggie, the previous day's summary ran thus:

'Neil wants to repay the money Tom lent him for the house, and broaches the subject with Susan. She's keen to be out of debt, so Neil decides to pay the lot as soon as possible. Meanwhile Susan's anxious about Christopher. Nisha sound an Asian name - and how could an Asian girl own a horse. Neil tries to make her see sense, but all Susan's prejudices come to the fore.'

This does not explain how the Carters managed the sums, but it seems very clear that it was 'the lot'.
