Keri - could we possibly have a definitive answer on what expletive Matt used about the briefcase he tripped over?
Some of us have quite definitely heard two versions.
And - can we please, at some point, have a link to the Christmas Party Out Take cd that presumably Matt was performing for?
Thanks.
Dx
(Ps ... tried the usual word that goes with blinding, eff and ing, but it was blocked for being offensive.)
As I listened last night, I couldn't believe what I had heard Matt Say. As my wife made no comment, I thought I had been mistaken.
After the programme, I promptly forgot about it.
Then, after reading your message, I've taken a second listen, and fear that I may have been correct with my first thoughts.
If I am correct, I would be extremely surprised, and would go along with you and please urge Keri to clarify.
Keith
I've just LAed very carefully and I think it was 'ruddy'. Rather old fashioned and mild for a man like Matt but not enough to frighten the horses.

Mr K, Mr K!!!
We need urgent clarification on this one!!! ML is up in arms...not because of the F word so much as it would seem we are divided right down the middle and that there are two versions of Matt's encounter with the briefcase circulating out there!!
I personally heard the F word plus ing and cannot see how anyone could have heard it as "ruddy"...but as you will see in DTA there are plenty of fellow Mlanders who see (hear) it the other way round...
We're on tenterhooks here!!!
yes 'ruddy' to me, reggie. honestly if it had been a whiff of theother i'd have been hittingthe fainting couch and gulping down the smelling salts in record time, wouldnt i. mind you, is that lord reith i can hear turning in his grave?
Also, the thread in DTA is SOOO enjoyable that I just can't concentrate on my work today. This issue must be resolved ASAP, otherwise the economic cost to the country will be incalcuable.
Reggie, I would almost certainly say it wasn't "ruddy", and that it pretty well definitely ended "ing".
No, I am still fearing the worst, but, even now, can't believe what I am writing. Hope I will be proved to be wrong.
Keith
'Cocking'?
Much beloved of James May and I bet Matt Crawford is a Top Gear fan.

Sounded like 'rucking' to me. A composite of the two previously suggested words.

Well, the thread discussing this has had it's OP catpeed and then the entire thread was closed, no final message of explanation or anything of the sort.
I personally find it quite amusing that there are people so over-sensitive when nobody actually used the word (we CAN'T used it in ML, even if we want to).
Anyway, as someone else has pointed out, if so many of us heard it last night on the radio, why on earth shouldn't we discuss it here...??
I thought this was all a bit of lighthearted fun. What's going on?
Listen to the repeat at 2 today, if you dare!

I always tape TA for mike, (late lectures, chess matches etc). Last night the tape deffo (still) has Matt describing the briefcase as adjectivally a word ending in '-ing,' and the LA the same. The LA facility definitely (now) has "ruddy" as the adjective describing the briefcase.
[Psst! Wanna buy an audiotape? :+} )

Interesting... Dagesh did an audio capture of the "Trucking"(?) version...
<> No I'm not, Rosie!
P
not according to my lugholes, rosiedearest. never noticed what the word was 'live' but immediately the hoo hah next door started up, within minutes of broadcast, i l.a.'d and it sounded exactly like 'ruddy' to me!
Have just listened to my taped version and the version on LA.
With ear up to speaker it definitely sounds like "ruddy" on both, but at "normal" listening distance it could be mistaken for a word ending in "ing".
Anyone got Kim Durham's phone number ???

Have LA'd 4 times (sad) and every time it ends in 'king'. The initial syllable is unclear, I thought perhaps 'cracking'.
As I said in the original thread, this must be doing wonders for Radio 4's LA figures!

So the "two servers" theory is possible? I only listened again because of the hoo-hah - deffo same as the tape this morning (downstairs laptop) and deffo "ruddy" when I got back 12.30 (upstairs machine).
Tape still has the rogue (nand maybe rouged) version, natch!
It might be worth irene summoning him to her study, dondy!
How you a'doin gal?

Not the one I listened to just 30 seconds ago Rosie. The Ken Tynan version's still there! There *must* be more than one feed.

Fine thanks, bor !!!
How's your bit of Norfolk ??
dondy
i dont understand the two servers, thing, rosiedearest. and i'd have thought there would only be one master version, which would be broadcast from the mailbox. all most confusing. oh come on, mrk, where are you? he's probably blissfully ignorant of the hoo hah!
In a word? Windy! In several others....bloomin' cold, but sparkly blue up until a while ago. Time for the winter woolies again I think?

<quoteTime for the winter woolies again I think?</quote>
You're not wrong ! We had the rain about 20mins ago, but blue skies again now.
Not quite as windy as last week - thought we were going to have a tree land on the house one night ! (Might have used language such as Matt is accused of using, trying to drag this post back on topic !!!)
Dony
I don't know if I'm right but I thought he said crucking. A mixture of cruddy and the other word which I've heard some people use when they're cross in front of children etc.

I heard it as ruddy or bluddy but on the LA facility there was a definite "king" which was different from how I remembered it. Had it been edited I wonder?

Going to listen live in a mo...see if it's different from the version I listened to about 14 times this morning!!!
was it 'mucking', so beloved of Nevil Shute?
This morning has definitely been one of the funniest in a long time. Can't wait to LA at 2.
And OH and I are in the 'ing' camp. Can't hear 'ruddy' in the phrase at all.

Definitely two different versions. Ruddy on LA and something ending in ...ing at 2pm. Curiouser and curiouser.
Tue, 04 Mar 2008 14:10 GMT, in reply to Reggie Trentham in message 31
Well I just listened live at 2pm and for the first time could see how it could have been heard "ruddy". I've heard nothing but the other one until now.
So...it would seem the jury is definitely out on this one still.
Will we have to wait until the minibus on Sunday to get our final answer???
no it wasnt on my 2.00pm listening, reggie. still 'ruddy!

So have I, Alejandrita, and I still can't make it anything other than the 'f' word that it's always seemed to me.
On LA - ......ing
2.00pm repeat - ruddy
(to my ears anyway)
The powers that be are going to be able to say it was whatever they want it to be as everyone's hearing it differently, so we may never know the truth.
I'm not sure that it's appropriate to have a Rorschach about such a sensitive issue. Maybe different words were put in as a joke to get everybody wondering.
Yes well, very funny it is too!
Alejandrita, I agree with you. Having LA'd several times last night (yes, I must get out more) & hearing nothing but 'ing', at 2pm I then heard 'ruddy' for the first time. Curiouser and curiouser!
To my ears, last night, Matt pretty definitely used the F word.
On the LA, which I have recorded, the word sounded exactly the same.
I foolishly didn't listen to the 2:00 repeat, but a blind friend of mine reports the same result.
I should add that I listen via a high-quality digital tuner, through floor-standing speakers.
I guess I could be mistaken, but on listening, and relistening, over and over again, I am doubtful of this.
We definitely need a clarification from Mr K.

I think Mr. K must be keeping his head down on this one. Therefore the only course of action to determine the truth is to deluge Feedback with the crucial question. Mr. Bolton is our man, he will sort it out.

I'm agog that there's controversy. It's so clearly the profane king version that I can't understand what all this about. If our ears can hear things so differently (I dount there's two versions, really), are we all hearing the same episodes?
I really applaud its use, anyway.

I'm with the 'Profanosaurus' camp. I can't imagine how the two words could possibly be confused so there /must/ be two versions out there.
yes thats how i see it, gj. one expects a ref to a grassy wotsit and twin towers to be introduced soon. dont go for the two versions at all. and cant see 'feedback' being much use if its a poster from here on the blower, which is more than likely, who will be as obsessed and prejudiced as the rest of us.

You don't think it was the fault of the Lock Ness monster, do you, irene? The only one not (yet) blamed for the princess di farago. I wondered whether one server has a clearer transmitter, which makes "ruddy2 more obvious.
perhaps it wasn't Kim D at all but Prince Philip.....that might explain a lot. In so many ways.

Is that "high quality" as in heavily compressed DAB or MP3 broadcast with (mathematically) between 10% and 50% of the quality of a well-received analogue FM broadcast?
If so then don't believe all that you hear...
Really? I hadn't realised the quality was that poor. In that case, I could be completely wrong in what I thought I heard, and apologise.

Just listened to dagesh's clip again, with daughter as aural witness - and we both heard 'ruddy' this time. It's a bit slurred and it does sound like an 'ing' on the end.
