Did Nelson really die in a hail of bullets in South america, or did I dream it? I remember Lizzie saying that we would never see him again because he was in South America - the episode which followed the news about the Oklahoma bombing, as I recall - and there was a villan looking for money in Honeysuckle Cottage when the Hathaways were there. Did he really die shot by drug runners, or is that just one of these jolly fictions we are led to believe?
No, his death certificate said "heart failure" (in Spanish).
According to my Archers Calendar, today, 18th March, is the anniversary of the day in 2001 that Nelson's death reached Ambridge - though maybe the questioner knew this.
It's an easy mistake to make but I think you're confusing Nelson with Che Guevara.
'looked a lot like Che Guevara, drove a diesel van'
Thank you Mr K
(I shouldn`t read about Terry Lennox before listening to to the programme. It confuses me)
I still hope that the death certificate was fictitious and Nelson will return to Ambridge one day. I know that the excellent Jack May died and Nelson will need to be recast but Dan Archer was recast several times. Other characters have also had a change of actor.
Ambridge needs a humourous, intelligent character before it sinks into a well of mediocrity. The only recent contenders in the humour stakes were quickly dropped. Robert Snell, without Lynda, was developing into a good, likeable, funny person. Jim, the scourge of Shula, while not being popular, was nevertheless amusing. Any light relief at the moment is provided by the Grundys. Was it not ever thus? Can I make a plea for more witty, amusing dialogue, not the infantile escapades of Eddie and Joe.
The humour figures now are Bert & Nigel, but intelligent????
I agree with you Pahnda that Bert is sometimes used as a 'humourous' character, rather unsuccessfully, though. His tour guide episodes some time back were unfunny in the extreme. He was used, I think, to show that as a retired farm labourer now mixing with the boss class, he was still inferior. The Grundys are always used to provide 'humour' although it usually turns out that Eddie and Joe are none too bright and not not that honest. The storyline about Eddie and the weights in his pocket showed him to be weak-willed and dishonest, not much humour there. Joe's endless search for a free meal, or a free anything, is never less than embarrassing.
I never thought of Nigel as being used for 'humour'. Perhaps in his 'hooray Henry' days but now I see him as a bit of a dreamer and quite a good foil to Lizzie.
i agree, i loved nelson, and walter.. how about bringing back a few of the old characters... what about nelsons daughter rosie.. she could get in touch with lizzy, who was always very special to nelson, to say she d had a cryptic message..... the missing proceeds from the great ambridge train robbery could surface.....take note jo toye, i ll help u write it! lynda

Sadly, given Rosie's career choices, it's unlikely that Lizzie would be her first call.
so. did we ever find out what they were digging in the garden for? I must have missed that.

Mister Keri, can I suggest the first line of the original posting as a quote for next week's front page?

Yes, they often do. If you know what I mean.
Now I'm wondering if it said "secondary to alcoholic cardiomyopathy" or some such (in Spanish) after "heart failure" Only organ failure alone is not permissible as the sole cause of death on a UK death certificate; presumably the Spanish system is similar.

Heart attack surely is acceptable
But a heart attack is a myocardial infarction. Heart failure is different, could be one of many causes and so in the UK is not acceptable as a cause of death.
I'm sorry he is not about, I would have enjoyed buffing up his antiques.
I WAS thinking of Terry Lennox. He was a friend of Marlowe's in The Long Goodbye, his death certificate was issued in South America saying words to the effect of "heart failure" where he was really whooping it up after killing his wife.
Should have put spoiler alert at the top, but Chandler counts as Classics, and we are allowed to mention endings there (Elizabeth marries Mr. D'Arcy, it's dwarf in a red anorak, Tim Roth is the undercover policeman, King Lear is too late to save his daughter, Jocasta is Oedipus' mother)

I've always thought that Geoffrey Whitehead would have made a good replacement for Jack May in the role of Nelson. Has hever appeared in the Archers; I'd be surprised if he hadn't as he's been in verything else. ( Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 7 could be renamed 'Geoff's Pension Fund')
