Have the Beeb ever done a survey on this? What could the SWs do to encourage a younger audience?
Link to this forum: What do you think the average age is of TA listener?
Why would the SWs want to encourage a younger audience? They have a whole radio network to themselves, and plenty of TV progs aimed at them (some of which would make watching paint dry look exciting, but that's a different issue.)
If this would involve increased appearances by characters such as Pipsqueak, I for one would be dead against it.
I'm sure that plenty of thirty-somethings and older are discovering the programme, so it's not as if the average listener age is gradually getting older and older (that would be a pity).

Hear hear. Why must everything be aimed at the young audience and why is it assumed that the young audience only want to listen to young people's stuff anyway? That's a bit patronising surely?

But in my post I was trying to say that I thought there was a steady stream of thirty-something listeners joining the TA audience, so this won't happen.

Precisely SA, what the R4 powers that be don't realise is that, although the audience is middle aged/elderly, there is always a new cohort of middle aged/elderly listeners coming up behind as we drop off our perches.
Ever since R4 was invented I remember them worrying about the aging audience and yet the audience figures stay reasonably constant over the decades.

At least a day older, by my reckoning.

The SWs don't have to do anything.
In my experience, it happens like this: your mum listens to TA all the time, so you spend your childhood with TA in the background. Then you become a teenager and begin to despise and detest everything your parents do, including listening to TA. You scoff at TA in your teens and twenties.
Then you settle down, produce children of your own, your life rhythm changes, and you find yourself not turning off the radio when TA comes on. You catch up with the old characters and get acquainted with the new ones. Then you get hooked on some of the stories and so on. Before you know it, your own kids are growing up with TA in the background.
My three haven't reached that parent and TA hating stage yet, but the eldest is getting closer.

I'm sure there are some very young listeners - if it's on in the house, everyone's listening. Isn't that how most of us came to it?

I started listening to it when I was A-level age, just because I had R4 on all day while revising (I couldn't do that now and concentrate...)
I think people come to it (TA) when they're ready. The audience renews itself. (if the programme is working).

I agree - I think many people have posted over the years to the effect that 'it was on at home so I've always listened to it' - certainly that was how I discovered TA.
If it worked for us, there's no need to change now to attract the 'yoof' surely.

Sorry I'm coming late to this thread. While the average Archers listener is in their early 50s, a quarter of The Archers audience is under 45.

Don't worry about coming late to threads, Mr. Keri. It's the avocadoes you've got to watch out for.

Well I'm 17 and I guess I only started listening to pass the time while revising (scraping the iplayer barrel, but then I got hooked!)
For starters, if you want more young people to listen, you need more realistic characters to represent us. Between Alice, Christopher and Pip, there's hardly a good idea of your average teenager I don't think. Bring back Izzy, that's what I say. And give Pip's darling Jonathan more of a part.
Something for the SWs to think about maybe.

I second this - and I am in my 50s. High time we had some more realistic teenage mayhem and angst in Ambridge for the oldies to tut about!

Wasn't it when they had the combined cow dancing and disco judging comp?
Of course Izzy has never actually been heard - I think she should...
