Two husbands both considerably older than her. I wonder why? When she used to be on the razzle with Shugs, she had a few boyfriends of a similar age..

Could it be (whispers) anything to do with money?

I thought Caroline had quite a bit of her own money. At least Caroline does work for a living which is more than can be said of the Archer women who have made it a habit to marry 'money'. Jennifer, Lilian and Peggy spring to mind. I know Peggy is only an Archer by marriage but obviously liked the idea. Elizabeth, I suppose, works promoting her own home and makes money out of that. She had to marry a man who had a bit of property to enable her to do this. Shula was left a cottage from her grandparents (I think it was), so she was free of worries on that score.
I almost feel sorry for Tony having to work on his farm. Wasn't there a nice, rich, young woman around for him?

The thought had occurred to me... I think Ollie should be VERY careful.

Mind you---it may be my over-fervent (and soon to get my bus pass!!) imagination, but in my mind's eye, both Guy and Ollie fitted into the 'grey-haired but still quite sexy and without superfluous flab' category....

Very possibly, Mircalla, but there must be many other men who fitted that description passing through Grey Gables... but who happened /not/ to be loaded.

I thought the point was that these were (bear with me here) men of sophistication and charm (at least compared with Tone and Moike). They'd seen the world outside Borsetshire, and stood for culture, travel, and a wider world. Well, Guy took C. to Southwold once. Caro misjudged Al - she tried to get him before Shula did, but he didn't want to come to a classical concert. But she spurred on Ollie to learn Italian.
Their money helped the illusion. Caroline used to know about Art History, good cuisine and such (a bit like Polly in Fawlty Towers); but it's like the Hayley thread. Cazza has dwindled.

A sad, but true, indictment of life in the enclave.

But there was......his sister Lilian, who married money, inherited the estate, and flogged the lot off, including Tony's farm, for a life of unbridled luxury. She COULD have gifted it to Tony (or any number of other options), thus sharing her good fortune, but even her mother told her that she should sell it off with the estate as it was James's inheritance. Fagash's claim that Matt's planning application was nothing to do with her was ever so slightly hypocritical owing to this history of ownership.

"And what was it that attracted you Ms Bone to millionaire Mr Pemberton/Sterling?"
