Please could we be told how Peggy made the phone-call last week to Jennifer telling her that Jack had shut her out of the house?
She said on another occasion that she can't be bothered with her mobile (or words to that effect), so it seems unlikely that she would have had it with her.
And is there a working phone-box nearby? and if so, why would she have had any money on her? (we never heard Jennifer being asked if she would accept a reverse-charge call--I'm assuming these still exist).
She probably falls into the class of people (I have met several) who carry a mobile phone "just for emergency use". It will be switched off 99% of the time.

Yes, possibly...but I didn't get that impression from what she said to Jennifer and Lilian the next day.

I've also known a few people who carry their mobile phone for emergencies only mike. They find it particularly helpful if going on a long car journey, in case of breakdown, or perhaps if they will be out late at night.
But I've not yet met someone who carries their mobile phone when they nip out to check the garden gate is shut. BB
I keep my mobile phone in my pocket all the time. Don't women have pockets or do they do something else with their mobile phones?

Hello you two.
Play nicely, now.
Are any of them in a similar domestic situation to Peggy...?

Its quite simple really.
The phone fairy let her have a phone for the evening.
Alternatively, she just commandeered a neighbour's phone - the map shows Meadow Farm just across the road from The Lodge. I don't think she would have gone to Grey Gables as (1) it's a bit far and (2) she would have had to say she had gone there to phone to be picked up for the return.
