I was in our Library Van this morning, when a neighbour came in and said, "Hello, you two!" which led us to dissing Shula, naturally enough. Anyway, she wondered where Shula went for her library books. I said I thought that Ambridge had in the past had a mobile library, but neither of us is sure whether it still does. Can any body tell me?
I just want to praise our mobile library service which is a lifeline in our rural community - not just providing books, but also an opportunity for people to get together and gossip about our village and about Ambridge.

I recall the mobile library van in Martha woodford's day - also I think there was an Aunt Laura mention in the library van.
But I don't remember it coming to Ambridge nowadays. Lynda told William she'd go and find a copy of the wedding poem at the Borchester Library, "if I can't find it at Grey Gables," or some such oddity.
I think Siobhán also pretended she'd come from the Borchester Library when she met someone after being with Brian: and Peggy mentioned going into Borechester to change her library books,
Frances Graham, from Borchester, used to run a mobile library which visited Ambridge in the 1970's.
She was promoted to run the Borchester library in 1974.
I certainly can't recall the mobile library being mentioned in the last number of years, so assume that Shula must get her books from Borchester.
Best wishes
Keith
Whoops! I should have said Frances was promoted to run Hollerton library, not Borchester. Sorry.

Thanks, Rosie and Keith - I had a distant memory of the library van, but hadn't heard it mentioned recently. What a shame that Ambridge apparently no longer has this useful rural service.

Just because it hasn't been mentioned doesn't mean it's not there. I have a vague recollection of a short storyline some years ago in which one character promised to take back another character's books (but failed to do so). On the other hand, this may be an episode out of my own life, as I have occasionally been rather bad at returning library books (and one person asked me to return some for him which were very overdue).

That's why I said "apparently".
I disagree with the "apparently"!

I can vaguely recall Jennifer I think it was going into Borchester library and meeting someone from Ambridge and discussing facilities for children. Ages ago now.

I seem to remember Peggy mentioning some library books. I think someone was looking after Jack for her that day, (this was before she had her stroke), and she said she had some errands, including a visit to the library.
At the time, I assumed that it was either the Borchester or the Felpersham Library. I didn't know there was a mobile service in Ambridge.

Sorry, RosieT, I just saw this. Should have read the thread more carefully.

There have been many mentions of the Borchester Library over the years, most recently featuring Lynda bumping into other Ambridge residents there.

Didn't Jennifer practically /live/ in Borchester Library when she was researching her local history book?

I am sure, mike. It is just that I only moved to the UK and started listening to TA last autumn (2007), so I only remembered that one instance with Peggy, which I then saw that RosieT had already mentioned. So my contribution was moot!
Does Ambridge have a book club? I imagine that Lynda, Jennifer, Peggy and Kathy might be interested in something like that.

The topic of library services in the Ambridge area has definitely been raised before on these boards. I recall contributing to a thread about Roy Tucker having to obtain books from (I think) the library in Felpersham.
As Roy was still studying at the time, this must have been a while back. Presumably (and perhaps Keri could advise us on this) there is no way of tracking back old threads without knowing when they were current and what their exact title was.
