Can someone enlighten me as to neil's job status. he used to be a pigman in Brookfield and subsequently worked for Tom at one point. Does he now run his own business?

That's a good question. He does run his own business breeding pigs on the bit of land that Bill Insley left him at Willow farm and I think he has a stake in the Tuckers' organic chickens (how are they faring with the builders there?).

He can't make a full-time living out of that but you never hear of him doing any other work since Tom gave him the heave ho, apart from helping Tom out the other week of course.

Since Brookfield let him go (and apart
from his period working for Tom) Neil has
done casual farm work as well as run his
pig business. This has been periodically
mentioned on the programme (but not
    recently).

Neil did have a full-time job after getting the push from Brookfield, working as a rep for a feed company. Susan, as you would expect, loved the idea of him in a white collar occupation. He also had his pigs at the time so they must be a very part-time business.

We often hear of Eddie, who is also self employed, doing all sorts of income raising things, both legitimate and otherwise. We hear of Mike doing other work, eg dealing with Peggy's tree, than his permanent part-time milkman's job. We know that Jazzer has (at least), two part-time jobs, as do Kirsty and Emma. But we never, recently, hear of Neil doing anything but look after his pigs (apart from the recent favour for Tom).

In the last year or so Neil had some tractor work from either Home Farm or Brookfield.

Neil does of course also have a contract from the Parish Council to trim the grass verges and collect up litter in the village. He was awarded this so long ago that I am the only person who remembers. (As he was/is also a member of the PC he had to leave the meeting was discussed.)

Hang on, I thought Neil left Brookfield "voluntarily" when Susan wanted him to "better himself" as a feed rep?

Wasn't it after he resigned from the feed firm (unwilling to be beastly to the Grundy's on their behalf?) that he took on various casual jobs, before being invited to work at Brookfield on a new pig enterprise. However, the plan changed and he was given then push. Correct me if I'm wrong!

At one stage I seem to remember him waxing lyrical about his status as a jobbing casual worker, saying that there had been people like him working in this way in villages like Ambridge for generations....

Neil was working (at least half-time) at BF when they closed the pig unit.

Yes, Neil would have left Brookfield the first time in the early 90's (he was working for the feed firm when Susan was in prison, hence Maureen Travis) and the second time in the late 90's/early 00's - after the Grundy's were having their final financial problems at the farm (Neil left the feed firm at that time....).

From firm to farm, you could say....

Does this include looking after the bus shelter and cleaning off graffiti?

Given that one of the difficulties that SW face is how two unrelated people are ever likely to meet each other eg Village Shop, Bull, Panto, I would have thought that Neil as Village odd job man would have been a gift but he is never cast in this role.

Right, I'd forgotten that Neil's parting from Brookfield was more complicated than I posted.

I still think it's odd that we have a fairly clear idea what sources of income practically every other speaking Ambridgite (? Ambridgian?, Antabrian?) has but not Neil. He and Susan can't live in the gracious style they are accustomed to at Ambridge View just on her wages, the income from the pigs, Neil's contract to keep the village clean and tidy and the odd bit of tractor work at Brookfield or Home farm.

Didn't Neil go into partnership with Betty and the Hens (sounds like a pop group of my youth)? Or did she just go to him for advice? Hasn't he still got any of his own hens?

Of course Neil had an egg round years ago (Small-scale Battery hens)when he was still working at Brookfield the first time round.

He and Betty launched a free-range egg project more recently. My impression was that his co-operation with the Tuckers was still going on, though I don't know with whom. Hayley wanted to have a go at some stage, I think.

Hayley wanted to fail to replace non-laying hens, and let the whole thing die out, as I recall, but was emotionally blackmailed into having to take on the sole responsibility by racist and his father.
