MLers sometimes mention "briefcase" in posts - clearly a reference that has passed me by. Anyone care to fill me in on what it means, and how it came about?
(Just trying to catch up with 2008 before it changes into 2009 and I have to start all over again.)

Some months ago, Matt Crawford dashed to answer front door and tripped over and many of us heard him use a norty word beginning with F. However, after many threads and much discussion, we were assured by Keri that Matt had actually said 'oh goodness me, I've tripped over my blessed briefcase'.
Yeah right.

Aha, thanks very much Dx. All is clear now.
I'm sitting here chortling all over again (when I'm really s'pposed to be working: don't tell the Boss).

Matt was supposed to have said "ruddy briefcase", IIRC, but it certainly sounded like something much stronger to many of us.

Well, my wife and I both listened several times to the incident in question and neither of us was/is in any doubt that the word used by Matt was the one beginning with f and ending in ing. I agree it seems unlikely that this would ever have been allowed on air (not on TA anyway) but that is how it came across to many listeners.

Kim Durham (Matt) claims he said 'ruddy briefcase', but I have an MP3 file which suggests otherwise....

Lb: I, too, have an MP3 file, and to my mind the word Matt said definitely did not begin with "r" but did begin with "f".

Definitely 'f' sound. Sometimes things have slipped through the net and been broadcast. Eg. Kenton in the cafe when he was thousand of miles away. This was a different type of slip-up on the editing front but equally sloppy.

I wouldn't call it sloppy. It Kim Durham says he said 'ruddy', he should know; unless you're suggesting he lied. And 'ruddy' is what is in the script, apparently.
He could have said 'oof!' as he tripped up, and then 'ruddy briefcase', and elided the two on the recorded performance. It certainly sounds to me like something else, but there are many factors which go in to make up what we hear.
So I wouldn't call it 'sloppy', because I don't see it as a mistake. The actors, editors and producers clearly were all happy with it, even though some of us have heard it differently. (Someone on another thread has just posted that they can only hear 'ruddy', no matter how many times they listen to it.) It's amusing, certainly, but not sloppy.
'Ö'
This is precisely the point I was trying to make in message 5 above. Although the f word is what came across to many listeners at the time (including myself) I do not believe this is what was actually said.
