Hello everyone. I'm new to these message boards but a life long Archers fan. I note how knowledgeable many of you are and wonder if anyone can iron out a little niggle I have.

I seem to remember that Alice had some sort of problem as a baby/young child and was often referred to as "poor Alice". She didn't go to the local school but a special one was found for her. I can't recall much being said about her for a few years then she emerged taking A levels and going to Uni.

    Can anyone help?

Welcome, clearwhitecloud. Although various Ambridge children have had health problems/ birth defects (Lizzie: heart murmur; Helen: clicky hips; Christopher: cleft palate; Abi: premature) Alice is not one of them.

I wonder if you are thinking of Elizabeth who was born with a heart problem, hole, I think. She had to be monitored when expecting the twins. I thought there might have been a bigger story at the time, maybe the actor was leaving or something, but all was well in the end

There were concerns about Jennifer before Alice was born, largely on account of her age and its pessible effect on the baby's health. Various tests with names that outdo my spelling.

Happily Alice turned out to be what passes for normal in the Enclave

Does anyone remember the dramatic episode some years ago (not sure if it was before or after the arrival of Lily'n'Freddie) when Elizabeth collapsed and had to be defibrillated by paramedics? We didn't know at the end whether she would survive or not IIRC.
Now that WAS a cliffhanger! But when was it, and what led up to it?

I think Lizzie fainted but then recovered and went into hospital. She was overworking when pregnant. I don't think we heard any paramedics attend Lizzie ... I think you may be confusing this with the time Betty collapsed when we did have non-silent paramedics.

Lizzie fainted in 2000 (around the time Ruth got her cancer diagnosis), but on Jan 26th 2001 she collapsed during a row with Phil, following the Brookfield Inheritance saga, and a defibrilator was needed as her heart stopped.

    Thanks, Mabel.
(Mike had me worried for a minute--thought I had been having a senior moment!)

I remember the fact that Lizzie collapsed during the inheritance sage, but I don't recall the details (possibly I missed the episode) - did we hear the paramedics restart her heart on air?

I think that the episode ended with an anguished Phil saying to someone "Her heart's stopped! They're trying to restart it with a defibrillator!" (or words to that effect).
Then at the beginning of the next episode we found out that "they" (paramedics, I assumed at the time) had been successful.
But where is Rosie T? doesn't she know?

Previous faint, June 2000, as reported on the Lowfield summaries

"As Jennifer arrives to invite them around to a barbeque later in the week, the phone rings. It's Nigel. Lizzie has collapsed in the caf&eactue; and the doctor is en route ..."

THis is the big collapse, Jan 2001

"As Elizabeth fails to slow down, Phil pays a call to try to talk her around. She throws her newly-lost lack of say in Brookfield back at him as a reason for him to not tell her how to run Lower Loxley. As the temperature rises, she collapses ... and with the paramedic firing up the defibrillator, her heart stops and the medics set to work ... "

Hmmmm, could this be the week that David got stuck under a cow? (I was in the USA that week and to my enormous regret I never heard David being squished.)

    The official summary notes

"Phil tries to get Elizabeth to slow down, but Elizabeth gives him short shrift, resentful that, as she no longer has any say in Brookfield, Phil should appear to be telling her how to do her job. The argument becomes heated. Elizabeth becomes short of breath, develops chest pains and collapses.

Elizabeth is lying still, her heart stopped. To Phil’s and Nigel’s horror, the defibrillator fails to revive her."

Dredging my memory we may have heard the defib charging up, but not sure if we heard any paramedics

I /think/ we just had reports of what the paramedics did, in the following programme, as Phil and Jill reminisced outside the ward, oh, when she was born with the hole in the heart, I've always felt such a soft spot, fragile little thing, daddy's girl etc.

David stuck under the cow New years Eve 2000, as Roy proposed to Hayley (Archers 50th anniversary)

    Lizzie collapses Jan 28th 2001

It was a very dramatic period. Ruth was diagnosed in June 2000, as the Sid & Jolene affair became public and his marriage collapsed, the Grundys were in Meadow View and the Brookfield inheritance saga dragged on. That Christmas, along with the cow squashing, Kate had just returned, with Noli about to appear and then the question of whether she'd try to take Phoebe back to South Africa. Tim and Janet were getting friendly.
