Firstly, apologies for this rather obscure topic heading.

I've been thinking recently about canning factories in the Archers. Well, it's taken my mind off the credit crunch!

Various characters have worked at the canning factory in Borchester, the one owned by Sir Sidney Goodman RIP - Nora McAuley, Susan Carter, Sharon Richards and Val Collard, to mention just four.

I know that Sir Sid also owned a canning factory in Spain.

In TBOTA mention is made that Nora worked in Horton's Canning Factory, whereas TAE says she worked at the canning factory.

Surely Sir Sidney's little enterprise should have been called Goodman's Canning Factory, rather than Horton's, or did Sir Sidney take the factory over from Horton?

And, for that matter, who was Horton? Possibly a relation of Maurice Horton the butcher?

If anyone could kindly put me out of my misery, I'd really appreciate it, and I could then go back to credit crunching.

Maybe, Keri, if no-one else can help, you could please ask the estimable Camilla?

    Thank you.

    Keith

I have to say this is the first I've ever heard of Horton in this context.

    I'll investigate.

It is certainly time we heard from (or even about) Sir Sidney and Lady Mercedes.

    Such a fascinating couple.

Incidentally I see on the characters that Bunty Hebden is listed, together with the actress who plays her.

Rather generous. It must be 15 years (?) since she appeared.

We heard of Sir Sydney's death, Lilian read Jack's speech at the funeral.

The records are unclear as to whether Horton's and Sir Sidney's factories are the same. My instinct would be that they were intended to be - Horton's being the trade name.

    HTH.

Keri, many thanks for your research on my behalf.

I'm sure that what you say is quite correct.

By the way, to correct a little slip of mine, the reference to Horton's in TBOTA was under the entry for George Barford, not for Nora.

    Thanks again.

Jenny did borrow something from Mercedes fairly recently, didn't she, (or was it Lynda?), and someone mentioned she was rattling around lonely in that big house.

But I agree we should be told more about the canning factories, if they are still there, and who runs them, and who works there.
