Has this been discussed before? The tech people have started creating spatial effects, but all this in fact means to most listeners is some voices being faint and the semantic context telling you why (x is in the next room, y is talking to someone else, etc.). It may be aimed at improving the sense of reality, but in other than ideal, quiet listening conditions it is misguided, in truth plain annoying--in the car, in the kitchen, quietly at the computer when the kids are going to sleep, and so on. Just because a technology is available, that doesn't mean it's appropriate.

Not that I'm aware. As far as I know, we're still use the same techniques as have been in use for the last twenty years or so. That does include the use of perspective by being varying degrees on or off-mic, of course.

I've noticed several odd/irritating effects when listening on Freeview with "3D SRS" turned on on my TV. It leads to characters who are off-mic to one side being drowned out by breathing/rustling from characters positioned more centrally, and sometimes the other way round - there's no easy way to predict how they will interact. I got round this by turning SRS off, but it's the kind of thing that Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú engineers should be aware of when they are previewing the output as more people listen through Freeview/Sky using a TV with "fake" surround sound.

That's interesting, Peet. I'll pass that on.
